I suspect this has been done here before, but always good to see another music thread.

I'll throw this one down first.
It takes the song and does something incredible with it.

As a Brucey bonus, I'll also add this.

I love The Who, but Elton shreds this mofo.

I can think of 3 Dylan tracks off the top of my head to get others started!

Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness.

Strictly speaking this is the original.

Recorded a year before the GK version but kept on the shelf for two years.

Norman Whitfield was great at giving the same song to multiple artists and getting something different from each one.

True - that's why I said that the Gladys Knight version was the first to be released.

Done some cheeky googling and I didn't realise this was a cover. Originally written for the musical The Roar of the Greasepaint — The Smell of the Crowd and first performed on stage in 1964. First covered by Nina Simone for her 1965 album I Put a Spell on You. And then according to Wiki "the song has also been covered by Sammy Davis Jr., Traffic, Michael Bublé, John Coltrane, George Michael, Victory, Eels, Joe Bonamassa, Eden, Black Cat Bones, Bassnectar, Sophie B. Hawkins, Leslie West, Avicii, Chlöe and Lauryn Hill among others. It was also performed by John Legend as part of the Celebrating America performance marking the inauguration of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris on 20 January 2021."

One of those "others" is this version. I can't imagine any of the rest being any better.

Many won't agree but I love Del Shannon who had a small it with From me to you before the Beatles and John Lennon wouldn't then let Del record Twist and Shout.

Not sure it’s better, but still a very good cover. Respect by Aretha Franklin covered by Adeva

Hard to disagree with that. Much better paced than the original.

How could John Lennon stop Del SHannon recording Twist and Shout? It was written by by Phil Medley and Bert Berns and recorded by several acts before the Beatles covered it, including the Isleys.

Also The Betakes hit number one in the UK with From Me To You two months before Shannon released his version.

Any version of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah is better than the original dirge, even that X factor one.

Cohen's original is good but this is better, and Leonard thought so too:

I think Jeff Buckley took this cover (not this live version but the album version many years earlier) rather than the original as his template:

And then there is this bit of slow dazzle with a Suffolk connection:

Never head that before, thank you very much for that, I think you have just wrestled the TWTD soul boy crown off Glassers in one easy manoeuvre...

I am no musician and I realise that tunes get 'lifted' all over the place but I cannot help but notice that Hathaway's piano on this recording from August 1971 bears resemblances to Elton John's 1973 'Bennie and The Jets'.

Never realised that was a cover version (well it is if you class Chrissie Hynde covering her own song but without The Pretenders), but always knew this was:

Apologies, just realised that you posted the wonderful Chrissie Hynde video as a remedy for the one time singer of The Smiths cover travesty (which I have not even accorded the credit of listening to) but I would have given Wicklow's post an uppie for the U2 were it the only track in the post. They were a good band once upon a time.
