Looks like the squad is weaker since it was this time a month ago.... 08:23 - Feb 1 with 3265 viewsitfcjoe

....but I don't feel the matchday 18 or so is.

Realistically we've lost no-one who has contributed in the first half of the season, or you'd expect to do much between now and the end of the season

Walton signing was huge

Bit disappointed in the Bakinson for Harper move for the club long term as seems a very short term move to try before we buy TB whilst having RH needing to get involved

Think also a bit of a tacit admission at end of window when nothing happened that we know this season is unlikely to end in success, and that we aren't close enough to chuck something at it to get over the line.

Felt like it was more about trimming things and getting in a position for the summer window

Absolutely no need for that type of wild speculation though. It does no-one any favours.

There is no need for any speculation. That’s why it’s called speculation. I know wrong think is jumped on quicker than ever here but that’s how speculation works.

Agree on the Bakinson / Harper 'swap', and also concerned that Thompson means we're not going to see Edwards tried out at LWB. That is unless we end up buying both, or if they don't work out in the next month, our 'own' players get back in for some valuable experience before the end of the season.

Would also have liked to have seen a raw, but hungry and skillful target man brought in to develop. Can't say I'm overly convinced by any of our strikers if we go up into Div 2.

Hopeful that Baggott will get some game time if play-offs are out of reach, and would have liked to have seen Ndaba back for the same reason.

A 'raw, but hungry and skillful target man', you say - if Simpson and the club can get his contract situation sorted out (and if his head is in the right place), then might he be that?

How realistic is to it recruit someone on a higher level than Simpson as a reserve striker when we're mid-table in L1?

I've only seen tint bits of him, but he doesn't look like he fits the skillful part to me. Useful player probably, but not someone who can hold the ball up and play in the likes of Celina, Chaplin, Aluko or Morsy. Now, what we need is a Pablo Counago...

It would take something very very special to make the play-offs this year. I'm not sure it is financially worth the gamble when % success is small.

We've trimmed well, I think 10 out of contract in the summer, it will allow us to take stock, KM can make some recruitments he sees fit and it should leave us good stead for strong campaign next year.

I think your last two paragraphs are sadly true.

We really need to see top 6 performances between now and the end of the season though to give us belief that we can do it next year. So in my book theres alot to play for even if its about gearing up for next year.

I suspect both Bonne and Celina will not be here. So two key players to replace possibly. You could argue that we have a replacement for Celina already here.

Theres something still missing from the squad. Its just a nagging feeling with me that this squad isn't going to do it next year. I think we are a bit physically light. Also we just aren't creating enough chances still. Shots on goal needs to be nearer 20 per match in my opinion. Maybe sides are sitting deep against us. Not sure.

I know we have this contract dispute going on but we need to be looking at Simpson over the second half of this season. Seems to have come on leaps and bounds at Swindon and we can't let him stagnate. Being involved with the first team and seeing a path may help with his contract situation too.

I'd also like to see El Mizouni and Humphries getting minutes as well. As I posted on another thread, we need to be pushing these players on/trusting them if we really rate them.

20 shots per game, every game?

I think you need to lower your expectations a touch there.

I just looked at the leaders of each divisions last games. Rotherham had 18 shots away at Crewe. Man City had 20 at Southampton. Fulham had 19 at home to Blackpool. Forest green 14 at (second placed) Tranmere.

Thats the standard of league leaders. 20 may be a touch high as average per game but I don't think its far off.

Said it yesterday, Harper is a strange one. You're talking about a 21 year old who has played in the Premier League (albeit a few fleeting appearances) and has nigh on 50 appearances at Championship level. He was starting for Birmingham this time last year, yet finds himself behind just about everyone here, including Bakinson who has a similar pedigree. Harper is our asset, we invested a not insignifcant fee to bring him in and he just seems to have been frozen out completely.

Looking at the squad and the inbound and outbound activity it's the 1 that irks me. The rest I would agree with. I think the cleanse goes even deeper in the summer, Holy, Kenlock, Jackson, Carroll can all go with their contracts up. We'll have the nucleus of a decent squad.

In the Prem Liverpool top the average shots per game with 19, City manage 18 but then there is a gap. To give you an example Leeds are 5th with 14.
Ipswich average 10 which is the 4th worst in League One but Rotherham are top with only 15 and most of the top ten are around the 13 mark.
Fulham top the Championship 16, Newport are best in League Two with just under 14.
I think it is quite clear we don’t produce another shots but the 20 mark a game is very optimistic. If we averaged around 13-14 we’d be competing with the best sides in the division.
But there’s still the small matter of sticking it in the net.

I don't think we lost on Saturday because of a lack of squad skill or options, more that we were undone on a tactical and stylistic front.

SheffWed's close tackling, hunting in packs and running an effective offside trap denied us space and nullified our usual way of playing. You can't run into gaps if there aren't any and two opponents are right in your face as soon as the ball arrives, plus others well positioned to cut out passes. Our players are not that much better than others at this level they can overcome such things by sheer individual skill.

We only lost because one of Sheffield's breakaway counterattacks succeeded. Otherwise, the two teams pretty much cancelled each other out.

Yeah it was a kind of freakish goal really. You could say it's brilliant skill by the scorer but really, a ball over hit first time could go anywhere at League 1 level. That one arrowed right into the corner of the net, and proved to be the difference between the two teams.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Rotherham average around 15 pg. The top 6 are around 13 pg. We are at just over 10 pg this season.

Agree entirely with the Bakinson deal - seems such a strange deal.

I don’t think Bakinson is a bad footballer at all, but I hope we don’t turn the loan to permanent in the summer.

Murphy was unplayable during that one season and helped paper over some cracks that were appearing.
