I had no idea his gambling problems were still recent, losing his deposit for a house during lockdown etc. Interesting insight into the tactics used by companies to target addicts too. The article below is along similar lines, although I don’t think I’ve ever been good enough to be seen as “shrewd”, mainly because I’ve bet on Town too much over the years!

I've said before on here that I've seen what this can do to a person. Absolutely devastating.

Haven't seen it, will give it a watch.

I seem to remember him saying that the measures in place to address addiction are nonsense.

Phrases like 'when the fun stops, stop' really ignore the fundamental traits of addiction. I'm surprised that slogan is still going.

Really sad. They can’t get away from it either because the advertising is so in your face.

The tactics as well.

The advert with the stuntman who talks about spending his "sweet downtime" playing in an online casino should not be allowed IMO nor should the countless enticement they put out.

I have no issue with gambling and I like the odd flutter, but the tactics they employ to draw people in and much worse than that, keep people gambling are just awful

The tactics they use are disgusting.

If you are seen to have a problem or be a mug they shower you with free bets. If you can make money from them they ban you from offers and restrict you.

William Hill won't take a single penny from me now. Bet 365 limit me to £5 liability on most markets and won't even lay me £0.50 on an acca.

I came up with a strategy on Netbet where I was making about £2-10 per bet lumping on bets that were about 1.1 (and laying them off at lower odds on the exchange to lock in a profit). I went all in on every bet thinking they would see me as a mug and love that I would eventually lose my bank to them but no, they still restricted me to £4 stakes.

Truly impaired.

I get irritated seeing footballers on TV advertising gambling firms.

Why are the likes of Shearer and other multi-millionaires trying to help suck people into a world of potential misery just in order to earn themselves an extra few quid?

Yes, thought it was really interesting and also upsetting on how it can impact on the individual and then the 'ripple effect' on those around them.

It's a miracle that there's not more of an issue with problem gambling round football, given how deeply it's now embedded into the culture of the game. I'm always appalled by the amount of gambling ads whenever I venture into the pub to take in a Sky game.

Couple of years ago, I was sat watching a match in the juicer and there was a fella in there with his two kids(both under 10). He'd got three bets down on matches, one of them was 'his' and the other two were bets he'd put on for his kids.

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

it was hard to see him on another TV show where he was talking about the various demons he has(drink, drugs, gambling) and how he has failed and come back again so often.

I wonder if the pressure of him being on TV is a good thing or not

He always appears very vulnerable

I read somewhere that even in that slogan, the word 'FUN' is the only one that is in big letters and stands out more than the rest. Shameful really that some of these tactics are used.

I think what's worse with Sky football coverage is their own SkyBet service. Which is heavily promoted (alongside all the other betting company ads), but heavily promoted by their pundit team - 'we are a trusted team for football reporting, we're credible, oh and we recommend you got and do some betting!'

Although I do think the 'bet responsibly' and 'take a break' initiatives have merit.

Does Gary Neville promote Sky Bet (as in appear in adverts) like the others? that would surprise me.

He was on 5Live a while back with Nihal Arthanayake and it was a horrible listen.
Loved him as a player.

No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

Gambling just doesn't seem regulated well enough at all, especially in the digital age where the internet allows people to lose their whole worlds so quickly.

When the fun stops then it’s already far far too late.
