Seems to me that this is a battle between two groups with progressive ideals and as such, its a shame its got so heated and nasty. Calm chin-wagging with the assumption of good faith on both sides will be the only way to come to some sort of consensus. gender neutral toilets are fine in most cases. the main exception is venues such as bars where the problem isn't trans people at all - it's pissed cis men hassling women.
while in most situations distinguishing people on the basis of their chosen gender is entirely appropriate and right, in a small number of situations biology matters more and must be recognised - the exceptions where biology matters more that are usually discussed include: health care; prisons; refuges were women are escaping male violence; and sport.
