A young Blackpool player has today announced that he is gay 17:17 - May 16 with 6333 viewsSTYG

What a brave, awesome guy he is.

No doubt he will be subjected to abuse for a while and he's no doubt accepted that will sadly be the case, but he will hopefully be the role model he says he wants to be and be a small step at the start of real change.

When sexist abuse and racist abuse is still so rife in the game, even though it's so much better than it was, it's an obvious stick that morons will use to try and unsettle him with or throw at him.

But massive credit to him, to Blackpool and to have that pressure of being so early into his career and taking such a massive step is incredible. The only way prejudice will eventually be stamped out as much as possible is presumably visibility, inspiring others to do the same and allowing it to be commonplace and rightly accepted by future generations. The type of people that will be bothered by this are beyond changing sadly.

All the best in your career, Jake Daniels.

I don't think he will get that much abuse at matches. No doubt Twitter will be different though.

The overwhelming reaction seems to be positive.

Very brave of him, and it probably makes sense that it's someone of his age as I think that age group don't bat an eyelid at someone being gay and that's the way it should be.

It's great and very brave of the lad but it's quite sad that so few players thus far have actually come out as gay or have come into the sport. Hopefully this will help others make that leap.

Should we open a book on WHO'S fans it'll be?

I'll give you evens on Millwall and Leeds(ssuming they come down), 3/1 Birmingham, 100/1 Norwich.

/edit odds altered to reflect the fact that I've done Norwich fans a disservice here.

They might be inbred, delusional and hopelessly tinpot, but they're not overly racist.

Did the BTP catch up with any of our supporters after what they described as an “homophobic incident” following the Plymouth away match last season ?

Why is this news? I don't care if he is gay or straight and I'm sure most people of average intelligence feel the same way. There are more important things going on at the minute, but good luck to him anyway for advertising this fact.

Not sure 'advertising' is the right word there.

Announcing it is a big step for him as an individual and also potentially another step towards making people more comfortable being themselves and not living in fear.

If you are a straight male then it's more than a bit easy for you to say it's no big deal, because to it probably isn't.

But until all stigma has dispersed from society it's always going to be a big deal to many people in his situation.

Outside bet based on their occasional prediliction for a bit of the old racist chanting.

Mind you, if they start badly they'll be too busy directing their ire at the directors who gave them their longest period of participation.

I hope he doesn’t need to spend his whole career talking about this and can just focus on playing football and having a happy life. Total respect for the young man.

Probably not because it’s not going to be a big deal for his generation; it’s a big deal for British football but will be less of one once more players come out.

Have to disagree sadly. Quite a few on twitter are saying things in the line of "I don't care if he's gay but why did he feel the need to announce it? Players personal lives should be private." Not abusive as such but missing the point that gay people shouldn't have to hide who they are.

It's the stock middle-aged white bloke response that seems to be the most popular 'who cares', 'so what', 'big deal', 'why does he need to tell everyone'.

Well, lots of people care, it is a big deal and he needs to tell everyone because some members of society are still racist, sexist, homophobic or all three and until every last one of these people ceases to exist through future generations with more inclusive mindsets then it's on all of us to accept, educate on and promote equality.

Good for him and football.

He will be fine. Any negative stuff is likely to be drowned out.

Nice to see Stonewall say football is ready for this. For so long we've had people saying they don't know if football fans could handle it like we're all a bunch of knuckle dragging idiots.

Truly impaired.

Wonder what his teammate thinks…

His real team 'mates' will admire his courage and support his decision.
They will also focus 100% on his ability to play football - as should everybody who watches Blackpool in particular and football generally.
Surely that is what you meant by your question

Who knows. I doubt it, but it's not impossible that any team mates who have certain prejudicial views may end up realising that actually this colleague of their is just a normal guy who deserves to be liked or disliked purely on his actions and not his personal choices or how we feels.

I don't have that much faith in humanity. Such views are normally ingrained or tied in with religion so won't be changed.

If Jim Jeffries is correct, the bible twice mentions homosexuality being bad and mentions not eating shrimp twice as often, but plenty of very religious people in the US choose to eat the delicious shrimp. It's almost like they pick and choose the bits they want to follow.

What about love thy neighbour? That's a pretty famous one right. Even 'being christian' is supposed to be about embracing other people and treating them how you'd like to be treated, sharing, caring etc isn't it? Arf.

The whole Jim Jeffries takedown of religion is absolutely amazing.

The whole people being around for all this time and then America is discovered and god finally decides which team to cheer for is brilliant. As is the bit about all the animals in the bible being all the ones that were within 5 miles of where it's set.

'Why wouldn't god have mentioned about the kangaroos' lol.

But yes, it's astonishing how half of the religious teachings seem to be fact and must be obeyed whilst other bits can be take it or leave it. It is surely not open to interpretation if you believe this is the word of god and what he wants you to do?

How can you believe in a higher power that is fit for your worship but at the same time go 'I don't agree with that bit mate, so I'm gonna play it differently'.

Cynical though this may be, there is a part of me that wonders whether this is a move to secure him more of a career. Obviously I have no idea how good he is, or the prospects of a 17 year old Blackpool player who has only played one game, and we have to take his statement at face value but it does seem like a possibility to me.
