Terrible! Just say there like statues in the last twenty mins. Helped the game get slowed down even more. I know it’s only a minor thing but these are marginal gains and we have to keep these games moving as quickly as possible…

I take your point...not invalid at all but we didn't win because we missed a number of good chances. Not cause the ball people weren't quick enough.

How many chances?

Can’t recall many.

I think the ball boys and girls are invited from local football clubs on a match by match basis so it’s a bit harsh to have a go at them really, as imagine being 12 or so and suddenly being thrown in front of 27000 shouty sweary fans. No wonder they are a bit overawed. I know a lad who was a regular ball boy for Spurs and was part of a group that did it regularly, and was even ‘coached’ on how to speed up or slow down the game as necessary by Mourinho.

Not really...they had one job...get the ball asap and give it back to a player...nothing to do with the crowd...I'd have given my left nut to be in their position when I was a kid...

Correct. Bit odd to be having a go at them ffs. They're kids.

And they should be briefed properly.

It's not that unusual for managers to make it known to the kids what is expected of them.

It has been known for managers to pass instruction for them to be a bit laid back or visa versa.

But as you say they are kids and maybe nuances aren't taken on board as well as they could be?

The boy and girl, bless them, in front of the North Stand looked 12 and just sat there with the ball near them and play needing to speed up

It was really poor

Don’t blame them, wrong people

I've said it before, I'll say it again, they should have ball people in the 30-55 age range, who'll kick every ball like the management do, will engage with the game and get the ball back at speed(or not) to our players, and not the opposition. Remember how Pardew did that in the play off game, and the Liverpool lad who got the ball back for the corner V Barcelona? Only issue will be the older ones actually being able to move in the colder months...

That girls aren't boys is woke nonsense?

Holy crap.

Do people like you just invent ways to use the word 'woke' or something?

You didn't invent it so how the hell did you express yourself before these ridiculously childish concepts were given to you?

What a snowflake.

Pathetic isn't it.

What does woke mean?

Woke means "alert to injustice and discrimination in society, especially racism". Who can really object to that? It originated in the African American community in the US, but has been misappropriated by the right as part of the culture wars and become a term of abuse. All rather sad. Do those who are "anti-woke" think Black Lives Don't Matter, or want us to return to the days when black players were routinely abused at football matches?

The ball-people at Colchester are the same. They never leave their stools to pick up a ball. But be happy that at Portman Road if the ball’s booted into the stand there’s someone sitting there to throw it back!

I'm staggered that this obviously isn't happening here especially with KM who must know the importance of their roles in keeping our tempo high...

Even more staggered that these boys or girls aren't a team drilled by training - consider how brilliant the Wimbledon tennis ball teams are for example, this is serious professional sport after all..

I've been saying it for a season now...our ball boys and girls are the worst I have ever seen at a football match.
I don't want to dig out kids because I suspect either a) they haven't been given instruction, or b) they're not really interested.
But watching the two sit there behind the North Stand goal yesterday was massively frustrating when their goalkeeper was time-wasting in the second half. Seeing Lee Evans have to go and get the ball to take a corner was just ludicrous.
I appreciate they may be overawed, I appreciate they are just kids, so it's unfair having a pop at them.
But it does need to be raised with the club because it's not worth having them there at the moment. It's embarrassing.
The one thing I truly hate in football is time-wasting. This is an entertainment industry, you pay good money to watch the match and you should see the ball in play as much as possible.
I would rather Ipswich let in a late goal than resort to time-wasting tactics as long as every other team does the same. Clearly that won't happen.
But, in Germany, they use the multi-ball system and the ball boys/girls are massively switched on.
Giving the duties to local clubs is sentimental nonsense, you need kids or age-group players who can do the job properly. As people have rightly said, it's marginal gains and it prevents time-wasting.
If you want to give the local clubs a day out, then let them be mascots or get them or the pitch for a kickabout at half time.

I can't remember what Kieran McKenna said about ballboys/girls when he was asked, but I know previous managers have given instructions that they take their time to get the ball back to make sure the team is set and to prevent the opposition getting an advantage. I think they've felt it's asking too much to get them to make a judgement on whether they should get the ball back quickly or slowly depending on whose throw it is.

Ball “people”?

The ballboys were on the slow side alright.

If the boot were on the other foot, would you be happy to be called a ball girl? But I agree the expression "ball people" is a little odd. Much better to use the expression "ball boys and girls" which has been used at Wimbledon for many years without any backlash.

That's fine but yesterday they didn't even move behind the goal.
Even to make an attempt to collect the ball.
That's just kids sitting there, what's the point?
Surely the club must give them some instruction. Again, I'm not going to criticise the kids because we don't what they were told but most of them were just sitting on cushions yesterday doing nothing. I can't believe that is the intention of the role.
And there were a lot of fans near me moaning about it in the second half.

I don't think that they are criticising them on a personal basis, just that whoever arranges for them to be there should explain the job properly or get kids in who know how to do the job.

Evans literally ran past one of them who was sitting down, to get the ball for a corner when we were pressing at the end.

I think Phil's explanation is probably sound. The other thing is that they may not know that it is Evans who is going to take the corner, given that Chaplin took some yesterday.

Yes 100% ball person shouldn't be a throwaway job/reward as it appears to be now. Don't blame the kids there it has to be something the club are smart enough to get right.

The under 16’s are better off watching the first team from the stand, they’ll learn a lot more there than sitting at pitch level

My lad was at a league 1 side and the youth team/u16s did ball boy duty. They were coached on when to speed up and slow down play, who to give the ball to etc.
