If not Hirst, who? 22:33 - Aug 11 with 8204 views | OriginalMarkyP | There's a lot of conflicting rumours about 'a done deal', 'loans to Championship sides', 'Rodgers job being about to end' etc. It starts to feel like Celina part 2. We hopefully won't get burned twice in one window, and potentially (ideally) have an alternative. But who is he?

£2M for him is a big fee, that could see us walk away from the deal. *If the £2M valuation from Leicester is correct of course.

Presumably if there was a queue of clubs meeting their asking price (or close) then Leicester would've sold by now?

If the asking price was met, you'd certainly have thought he'd have been sold now, just depends what that asking price is to be honest. Anything around the £2M mark is ridiculous from my point of view.

If not Hirst, who? on 11:19 - Aug 12 by Superblue95 | I don’t think we will sign either of them. We don’t seem to do long drawn out sagas with Ashton so I wouldn’t be surprised if somebody totally different is signed that they’re quietly working on |
I am beginning to think this too. I get the impression Ashton does not suffer fools gladly and will move on if the agent's demands are excessive. I haven't got a clue who we might get and, quite frankly, looking at Middlesborough's search for strikers and their supporters' reactions for example to those incoming, I am really struggling to come up with any possibles.

If not Hirst, who? on 12:08 - Aug 12 with 1517 views | berkstractorboy | I've read Wigan and Rotherham looking at Ashley Fletcher is he a possibility assuming he prefers a project in L1 to champ football and possible relegation? Watford about to get Keinan Davis who was coming here (big lol) but if Dennis could be on the way too will Watford want to be a striker down? | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I am assuming that would be fairly easy to verify if that is happening. Someone in Ipswich will know if he is returning (esp the journo's)

If not Hirst, who? on 22:47 - Aug 11 by textbackup | wouldnt surprise me. and lets be honest, he scored one less in L1 than £2m rated Hirst. |
Hirst ended last season well. Before that and previously at Rotherham he did nothing to warrant a £2 million price tag

If not Hirst, who? on 11:06 - Aug 12 by jayessess | As we're in League One, I think it's unlikely we'll attract someone with a markedly better goalscoring record than Bonne. |
A youngster from the bottom two leagues? Even McKirdy has a better goal scoring record!

Depends how you value goals in different leagues I suppose. McKirdy's got 29 goals across 112 appearances, all in League 2. Bonne's got 79 in 294 appearances, across Championship, L1, L2 and National League.

If not Hirst, who? on 14:02 - Aug 12 with 1204 views | clive_baker | My unrealistic one would be Shayne Lavery from Blackpool. I think financially we could do it, and could certainly compete on wages, but whether he would drop down to L1 is another question. He was linked with Millwall recently and I can't imagine they will be paying what we're rumoured to need to prize Hirst off Leicester, so it could be a cheaper deal than that. I really think he's such a quality player and would be a brilliant fit for our system. Good age too with lots of upside potential. He's like a young Rooney although clearly not in that league. Scores goals, powerful, clever runner in behind, stretches defences. We need to throw some cash at Blackpool and take him off them.

If not Hirst, who? on 10:58 - Aug 12 by jayessess | I think if all we were looking for was a silver bullet for this season, I'm sure we would be able to find a cheaper and better option than Hirst. You go down the top 10 goalscorers in L1 for last season and there aren't a lot of young players. The average age is 28.6 and the only player younger than Hirst on the list was Scott Twine. In terms of probabilities, you'd be more likely to get a solid return from Sam Vokes and he'd be a heck of a lot cheaper. Hirst's fee would be based on him contributing for the whole 4 years we'd contract him for. |
I agree, but many fans seem not to be of that thinking. Many are down the road of wanting only instant success, not even affording Ladapo time to adjust. I’m not sold that any player at this level is a guaranteed goal scorer. You can only go on past performance, some of those you mention are probably what we need short term, but a Hirst type offers more over time if we deliver what we hope. I would also reconsider the Bonne option, if it is a option, it could work because we are looking a a player to share pitch time with Ladapo plus Bonne was quite effective in the 4231 under Cook. Good news is MA and KMcK get more right than wrong !

People go overboard in criticising players they've watched every week in relation to players they don't. I don't think you can make a plausible case that McKirdy's goalscoring record is more impressive than Bonne's. Any League 2 striker is obviously a bigger risk on paper than Bonne is.

My point was both have an average at best goalscoring record, for out and out "strikers". But yes, clearly Bonne is head and shoulders above McKirdy, in every area!!

Criticising? I just said I would rather Bonne. Never been impressed with what have seen from McKirdy and don't like the reports about his off field behaviour. And Bonne is a blue he gets it.

I was thinking the same. As well as a finisher, we could arguably do with a bit more physical presence as back up/competition for Ladapo for some games.
