For those who wish to know how it works... Simply put, these websites have to be indexable by Google (and others, but mainly Google) so they can be found when people are searching for whatever news story. This means that the crawler has to be able to view the contents of the page at least partially but very usually in it's entirety. This snapshot of the page is then viewable by going through Google Archive. This site (and other lesser known ones) then use Google Archive to display the pages.

I have to admire the fact that it uses the commercial imperative being found against them - no idea where that leaves such sites if this catches on in a big way though. Maybe they'll have to close off to google and hope people will still come. Edit: or maybe Google will have to adjust to how it ranks pages from paywalled sites even? They still usually offer a paragraph or two, so maybe with the page title, url and meta tags all visible, that'll be enough? [Post edited 29 Sep 2022 12:25]

From media barons who are playing the UK with a joystick while paying no tax here? That's morally wrong. I'll sleep easily if I can access the odd artcile that nobody actually asked them to put on the internet.
