Truss speech madness, politics of division and falsehoods 09:39 - Oct 6 with 3424 viewsunstableblue

I mean if we park for a minute just how badly she delivers this speech, frankly looking unhinged and nervous

It’s full of diversions and scapegoating to the clusterf@ck the Tories have created

This ‘anti-growth coalition’ label they want to use to divide us! Brexit is anti-growth, budget madness is anti-growth

It’s so concerning this woman is in charge… but what can we do

She will go down as the worst PM in history. Which is quite an achievement when following Johnson.

Truly impaired.

Nothing she said was either new or surprising.

She's an unelected PM pushing a non-mandated ideological set of policies.

It was always going to be a disaster as Sunak predicted and as we are now seeing.

Hopefully something good will come along the lines that parties can't just change their leaders and then do whatever they want regardless of their manifesto commitments but I wouldn't hold ones breath.

I imagine Sunak would be laughing his head off if the repercussions of the policies were not so serious.

Additionally, none of the constituent parts of the 'Anti-Growth Coalition' have been in power in the UK since 2015. Seven years.

Why, in such a lengthy period of of Conservative government, have they not produced this miraculous "growth"? Why are they blaming those not in a position to formulate or vote down policy for their own failure?

I suspect he is anyway as the repercussions aren't serious to him.

Perhaps harsh but he's not a virtue of righteousness either.

Her objective, presumably, was to paper over the cracks in the Conservative party by concentrating on the opposition. Think she managed that quite well but doubt if her delivery made any impact on anyone apart from those diehard party members in attendance.

Conservatives really do regard themselves as the safe option convinced that things would be far worse if others formed a government.

The time is approaching when we, the electorate, will have an opportunity to make changes.

Probably because blaming everyone else has worked since they got in power.

It's been "But the previous Labour government..." for a decade.

They are deluded and dead. Finished. Out on their corrupt ears in two years time. All they can do is tell lies, place blame and fill their own pockets.

When the country is deep in recession and if the power is switched off next Jan/Feb they’ll blame Putin, OPEC (Putin + luggage), Covid, the poor leaving the lights on, Labour, the Unions, Larry the cat, everybody and everything but themselves. But they are to blame. It’s all down to them.

The laugh is Truss going off to beg the EU to keep gas supplies going this winter. Give me one reason why they should after how they’ve been treated by the tories? If I was the EU I’d be telling Truss the U.K. is last in the queue after all other countries supplies have been fully met.

The hag will no doubt bleat about the U.K. exporting gas during the summer. So what? It’s hardly the fault of the EU that the U.K. has no storage. That’s down to the U.K, nobody else.

The Tory policy of lack of investment in key infrastructure and flogging everything they could is biting hard. And the arrogant a’wipes still think they’re the party of government?

Thatcher spoke about the enemy within, which was a few coal mining communities that were targetted - but she has set her enemy as basically everyone she needs to vote for her.

Also the talk of the 'anti-growth-coalition', it hardly gets much traction does it, not snappy, not something your 'white van man' is going to be talking about down the pub and to mates

Good point from jess Phillips as well, when talking about ' the North London lot in their Townhouses' going to the BBC people outside the capital don't get that reference, it's a niche political/cultural reference for those who would be a part of the 'anti-growth-coalition'

It's a bit dog whistley and anti-semitic too talking about people in the Jewish area of North London, in their big townhouses, controlling things etc but may just be me

It could be, but more likely I think, is that they've used up the Islington slur (which is where you'll find townhouses, along with Camden - Golder's Green and Finchley (classic well off 'Jewish' areas) are more large semis and detached).

This Islington has always pissed me off, partly cos that's where I was brought up, but mainly because its so ignorant. There's some extreme poverty in Islington, but one of things that makes it special is that there's no ghettoisation there - rich and poor really are next door for the most part.

It was also particularly ridiculous under the previous government as the Conservative Prime Minister was one of those people who lived in an Islington townhouse.

Yes indeed - his house was between the Angel and my Mum's flat near the canal (think its sold to pay for another divorce now). I even saw him with his minders on the day of the referendum - embarrassingly, I couldn't think of anything clever to say so came out with 'do you think you'll win' to which he mumbled some bollox or other. That moment has turned into a mini life regret!

We are in for massive demonisation over the next year or so (the Nazi playbook) - unions, nurses, teachers, the police and all those in the public sector. "We pay for their pensions.............." etc completely disregarding the large contributions made by the employees themselves. They are also beginning to add anyone who cares about the planet, which is straight out of the Trump playbook. There was a guy on R5 this morning going on about "lefties like Chris Packham" being given airtime.

Truss' comments about "Brexit deniers" make me laugh - she was a big Remainer until she realised she had to change tack, just like she did when she left the Lib-Dems.

They really are the most miserable crew of "leaders" this country has ever had. They have achieved the impossible by elevating Thatcher in the list of hated leaders.

I really don't like them very much...........................

The "wrong, wrong, wrong" comment has shades of Thatchers "out, out, out" response to the New Ireland Forum proposals. The New Ireland Forum was the precursor of the Good Friday Agreement and Maggie was "wrong, wrong, wrong" there also.

The pigs had Farmer Jones (Animal Farm), in 1984 the blame shifted between Eurasia and East Asia and Hitler had the Jews. Even 1950s USA had its reds under the beds. Travel back a few hundred years and it was the devil (not forgetting all his works) who was the source of all wrong

History has always thrown up nutters (unprincipled opportunists more like) to give voice to these scares. To demonise the current bogey man.

The 'ranter' is then not the real concern.

We are therefore faced with the thought - what is it that causes reasonable human beings to suspend rational thought and engage with these cranks

What has screwed them up so much that they swallow the belief that financiers, climate scientists, business leaders, leading ecologists and world leaders are all.......... wrong, wrong, wrong ?

No surprise really, as US donors are significant backers of the ‘Think Tanks’ of whom Truss and Kwarteng are effectively graduates, and whose representatives now hold key govt advisory positions. They ARE the government now, not the Tory Party.

“The TaxPayers’ Alliance, the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), Policy Exchange, the Adam Smith Institute and the Legatum Institute have raised $9m from American donors since 2012. Of this, at least $6m has been channelled to the UK, according to tax returns filed with US authorities — representing 11% of the think tanks’ total UK receipts, with the figure reaching 23% for the Adam Smith Institute.”

I don’t know whether there’s a publicly known direct link to Palin, but there’s a substantial Anglo-American axis of neoliberalism that’s funding, lobbying for and promoting the parallel approaches on each side of The Pond.
