Portman Road 1984 photos 09:16 - Oct 12 with 3204 viewsunstableblue

Am sure these have been posted before but really take me back to formative years going to Portman Road, and although Ferguson was in charge in 84, reminds me a lot of the Duncan years. Which despite seeming like a low time for the club, there were some great players and games.

The photos show the Pioneer looking quite archaic, with no executive boxes (will they ever finish the current set?!), and standing in the lower tier.

Me and my mate used to climb up into the camera scaffold that can be seen behind the home dugout and sit there every game, whilst our dads stood in that Pinoeer terracing below.

When I was very young we first started going we’d stand at the bottom of the Churchmans, which looking back was quite a big terrace.

The Cobbold looks by far the most modern stand, despite not being.

Also it reminded me of that terracing between the North and Pioneer, which was rarely used. But I do remember when the North became a home end only, and then seats were introduced, it used to get filled. When home tickets became difficult to buy under the glorious rise and football of Burley, I remember sitting/standing there regularly with a big group of us (we’d often come straight from a rave in East London … and there was for a number of months a large group of drummers/bongo players in there… to generate more atmosphere

Anyone else remember them?

Finally the terraced, electric score board bedecked and caged North Stand… some of the youngsters on here (I’m not old!!) would have marvelled at the scenes in there when full… it was tribal, bonkers… with ripples flowing down the crowd as people surged forward when it was packed. Remember going to a Tuesday night game under he lights after some seriously underage drinking in a rough pub near the docks… and it was mental

Ah memories… and thanks goodness with McKenna we’re getting them back… can’t wait for the Derby game under the lights.. where a black kit with bring further memorable moments!

I thought it was Marcus Evans who 'mossed' the North Stand!

My dad used to take me when I was a lad. A lot of fungis in there.

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

The Portman stand looked so smart and uncluttered, the original orange and grey seats suited it much better plus the boxes had a nice clean look without the hoardings tacked on to the roofs.

Exactly how I remember it when I started going - it started to change in the late 80s, when the Pioneer terrace was seated, then after the Hillsborough disaster when the fence dividing the two away pens was taken down.

It does look tidy doesn't it! Those fences in the North, hung on them a few times, ended up somewhere on the other side of stand, just through movement of crowd.

It's odd that in those pics it looks much smarter, even newer, than the Pioneer stand that was pretty much brand new.

I was born underwater, I dried out in the sun. I started humping volcanoes baby, when I was too young.

Great post. Gosh, where’s the time gone? I’d forgotten how the ground looked with so much standing and less adverts round it. Rather smart.

Of course, when the East (Cobbold) stand was built in 1971, that was all standing from the seats down. No exec boxes either. Where the orange seats are show the extensions that were added and opened in I think 74/75. I’m not sure why the stand wasn’t completed in one go (money?) but I did remember how posh it all felt.

With regard to the Pioneer Stand, the back of it has never been developed properly. Part of the problem is all the girders, but assuming the stand isn’t going to be replaced, there’s plenty of space to add and upgrade behind it.

Yes it really looks like the Pioneer was not finished; and the Cobbold looks much smarter.

The Exec boxes and blue seats throughout and now the new dug outs have completely changed the look.

I assume the current Exec Boxes are all sold out for the season and maybe promotion might encourage the remaining 2 or 3 boxes to be built.

I remember the North Stand before the fencing was erected, there was only a line of police separating the home fans from the away fans.
Every now and again you would some nutters trying to break through the police line to get to the other fans.
When we scored you would have no choice but to move with the crowd down to the front.
These were the days before fans wore football shirts and you never new who was standing behind you and would start a fight.
As much as I now love sitting in my seat on match days and visiting the fanzone before the match, I have so many crazy memories of those days.

TWTD. I was a young teenager then, so was used to Churchman’s rather than the NS. Those blue crowd barriers bring back (painful) memories.

I feel as though I grew up in there. As we moved house so much, it was probably an anchor point for my formative years

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

We should bring those goal nets back.
Does anybody know if you must have these box goal nets that everybody seems to have nowadays?
I remember every team had their own style, and you could tell the ground just by the goal nets, twtd.
I used to go with my dad and watch when he played for southwold in the 80s, and a local fisherman at the harbour used to make the nets!
