Henderson starting tomorrow.... 17:44 - Nov 28 with 4898 viewsBloots

....ahead of Bellingham.

Rock n Roll football from Southgate.

I know this might be a controversial opinion but I think Henderson is a fantastic footballer. I would go as far as saying he’s the most underrated English player of this generation, unbelievably talented.

Yep, don’t mind Hendo at all. Quality footballer.

I find it strange our fans approach, the doom and gloom.

We were brilliant against Iran, and below par performance against and decent enough USA team. It happens, why is everybody so OTT negative because we had a 1 below par performance (which we still didn't lose).

Our chances of topping the group remain very high, and still in our own hands.

This management team has led us to a WC semi-final and EURO final at their last two tournaments.

There's something to be said for having more solidity in a tournament and keeping (or not losing) control on a match, particularly one that could have an 'emotional' edge to it. If you look at past winners, they were fairly indifferent in the group stage and generally won by narrow scorelines in the knockouts with plenty of clean sheets (Spain won every knockout game including the final 1-0 in 2010).

However I tend to agree in our case Southgate has a tendency to overdo it - our strength (keeping it tight, not giving up many chances) becomes our weakness (too passive, not taking the initiative, allowing the other team to get something from the game). People say 'he got us to a semi-final and final back to back' which is good and true but look at what happened both times - got a lead then tried to sit on it for the whole game and came undone (yes Italy was penalties but the game was there for us to win as we had them rocked in the first half).

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

Probably because it is a return to the form we have shown prior to the tournament, and prior to the Euros too. England have been painful to watch for quite some time. Iran was a rare treat.

I won't knock Southgate's record in tournaments as there is not much to criticise, but we have gone back to being the very boring, pedestrian side he inherited for the most part, despite obvious quality throughout the side. I'm certain he will walk away at the end of the tournament, which I feel is probably the right time for both parties.

I'm not thrilled about Henderson starting, not a player I have ever enjoyed watching, though he is clearly a good player. That said, he's looked less than convincing in a Liverpool shirt this season, his age is showing and is probably the weak link in their squad going forward. I'd have stuck with Rice and Bellingham. The whole side looked poor the other day because we just sat back and waited for the game to come to us. It doesn't suit these players, we need to get at teams.

Wilson, as much as I resent him for his capers at Bournemouth (yes, I know I should move on) should get a start though. No point overworking an unfit Kane when you have that quality rotting on the bench. Foden for Mount would be fine by me too, can't see it though.

....but him playing next to RIce, who is basically a younger, fitter and more mobile version of Henderson is negative and dull.

My point wasn't a slight on Henderson, more a concern that Southgate has very quickly slipped back into his old safety first attitude.

Drop RIce for Henderson if you want, but not Bellingham.

Strong rumour has it it’s Saka out for Henderson.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

....or Saka.

Ideally Mount, with Bellingham pushed further forward, although the more obvious swap is for Rice.

Personally I'd play Rice and Bellingham whenever possible.

He’s a ‘leader’ Bellingham didn’t do anything whasoevee in the last game to justify inclusion and played in a midfield overrun by some headless USA chickens. I suspect Wales will play the same way - so you b many ways a sensible move. I’d be more concerned if he didn’t make at least two changes up front.

It's going to be:

Pickford

Walker Stones Maguire Shaw
Henderson Bellingham Rice

Wales don't have anything like the pace or physicality that USA have. They're more clasically European, we'll have loads of the ball I imagine the question will be if we can break them down. It'll be like watching Ipswich against Cheltenham.

It won't happen, but I would go:

Pickford
Walker Stones Maguire Shaw
Rice Henderson
Sterling Foden Grealish
Kane

I thought being an England fan in the EURO last year was without question the most exciting time to be an England fan in my life time, and probably in a lot of others.

One year on we are in a strong position to head in to the last 16 of the World Cup but because of below par performance against a decent USA there has been a lot of doom and gloom.

I don't always agree with Southgate selections/substitutions but you can't argue he has done very well with this England side, far more than any of his recent predecessors.

Henderson is a hasbeen. Even if he still plays for Liverstool. If ever a team could do with a couple of decent midfielders it's England. I believe the forward line is fine and the defence is adequate. But midfield Nah.

Sensible move having Henderson and Rice in imo. Allows Shaw and Walker to bomb on yet still help the back 2 CBs. Frees up Bellingham to get forward a bit more too.
