Truly dreadful.

Poll: Which manager of the Marcus Evans era do you dislike the most?

Agreed... Thought it was a bit disrespectful that both he and Lee Dixon started talking about playing France before the game had even reached its conclusion... Talk of arrogance

Matterface was also previously with the lovely Natalie Sawyer, prior to Dougie getting with her....

Twitter is largely full of morons but there are usually a few sane people on there and I think it’s striking I’ve never seen anybody agree with the decision to replace Tyldsley with Matterface

He's awful. Along with the majority of ITV commentators.

I think most of them are awful nowadays. Remember the BBC have:

Jonathan Pearce
Dion Dublin
Danny Murphy
Robyn Cowan
Martin Keown
Jon Champion

That’s so bad. I used to like Murphy but he’s just morphed into Lawrenson. Robyn Cowan is so flat it sounds like she’s commentating on a game she’s watching in her garage.

What annoys me of modern day commentators and Matterface is the worst for this, is that they never know when to shut up. At times relax for 10-20 seconds but he fills "dead air" with such pointless crap. Comes across really smarmy too.

he feels the need to make some sort of pun every ten minutes.

I did like though Dixons reply of "Im going with there is more than one chip" when Matterface has said something like "not sure they can have a flat ball as there's a chip in it"

He's dire and has absolutely zero charisma but it makes me laugh when people just rack off commentators/co-commentators that they don't like as it gives the impression they just don't like someone talking over the game!

Most of them are fine, Jenas is poor because he clearly doesn't bother doing any research on stuff like VAR rules so he just starts shouting 'how is this allowed?!' 'why don't we know what's going on?!' etc. and Murphy seems to be trying to be a poor man's Lawro but without the old school style of cynicism which had a certain charm.

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

With very few exceptions, today's commentators are ignorant of Richie Benaud's maxim: "if you've got nothing to say, say nothing". This goes for any sport and it seems that the producers/directors never bother to listen to the commentators' abilities before letting them loose on us. For most broadcasts, I turn off or reduce to a minimum the sound. Can you get a television with a "no commentary" option?

Doesn't John Champion work on ITV? Usually teams up with Ally McCoist and they are brilliant together.

He's awful.

He seems to get stuck on the most trivial points. I can remember an England game a few months back where for some reason he just kept on talking about how stylish Dominic Calvert-Lewin is. On numerous occasions. It was really weird.

He also obviously has 'pre-prepped' lines that he whacks out on occasion, which is toe-curling for the listener.

I dont know that its just that the current era of commentators are ignorant of that maxim, totally, their producers push them to be these constant chatterboxes too.

I remember when Mike Selvey quit/forced out of TMS and he said one of the constant things the producer said to him, which annoyed him, was make every ball sound it was the winning ball, every run the winning run, you had to make drama when there was none and basically go against Benauds advice to say nothing if you had nothing to say, hence the TMS bantz era.

and you see it across all sports now from cricket, to F1, to football even cycling, the constant is theres never any pause, theres always got to be something to say, and unless you're some after dinner speaker/raconteur who can talk about nothing for hours and there are a few of them left in the commentary gig, then you basically pick a few key things as cue cards to say during the comms that you can rely on to fill the gap, and the less experienced ones unfortunately tend to repeat themselves alot, because it almost becomes a Ive got to say this bit just to fill the silence so that people know I have something to say.

so Matterface is arguably a product of his time and the current system, than doing stuff of his own volation.

Ive been trying to listed to 5live instead of tv comms, but Chris Sutton keeps popping up and he's far far worse than Matterface

One of my favourite bits of commentary was by Barry Davies, who had a habit of just saying a player's name) in the England v Germany 1996 euro semi-final.
'Germany have the ball back.... (Pause for identification)...
'Kuntz' (pronounced Koontz, just to keep the censors happy).
He also said 'There is too much talk from commentators nowadays. Dramatic moments in football speak for themselves.'

Haha! Like it.

My favourite Ipswich commentary was a few years back when Brenner said: “ Now with Skuse* ... who curls one out on the right touch line.”

*Can’t remember the player and probably wasn’t Skuse.

McCoist is excellent as a co-commentator. Brilliant in Scotland games too where he gets carried away with the emotion and excitement but still never plays to the audience with exaggerated, black and white analysis.

That’s my main issue with a lot of the coverage. I get that colour commentators need to sell a story to some extent. But most games are never that simple.

Do you think so? I thought that he wet himself about Brazil far too many times the other night during the South Korea game. In fact, I started referring to him as McMoist!

I get that Brazil played well and Richarlison's goal (when he became particularly over-excited) was very well worked, but...

It's all about personal taste I suppose. For me, I prefer Souness's analysis. Always seems well balanced and with a great deal of insight and awareness (even though he was a complete thug when he played!)

The problem for any rugby commentator nowadays is following in the footsteps of Bill McLaren and Eddie Butler.
