A question of etiquette- World Cup viewing. 15:24 - Dec 5 with 5979 viewsMattinLondon

We have a couple of my partners friends coming over for the weekend. Both are football fans but have both decided to boycott the WC - that’s their call to make.

Would you watch the England match on the big brilliant telly and kinda force them to watch. Or should I retire to the bedroom to watch alone?

My partner, likes football as well, but she only watches the big international match as well and she wants to watch as well.

What would you do?

Thanks for all of the advice - they apparently will watch it but have promised to make some comments throughout regarding poor working conditions, lack of equality and corruption etc etc.

I'd tell them not to come round if that is the case and they have 'promised' to do that.

I'm sure you have researched this and know what has happened and what they will do isn't going to educate but just annoy you.

Same. Seems to be a bit having their cake and eating it.

sounds like a lovely evening of virtue signalling, after all watching it and making comments to you isn't really going to change much is it other than ruining your enjoyment of the match...

Yeah, take away the specifics and just on a politeness level it's a bit off. Why would you go to someone's house and deliberately ruin their enjoyment of something because you have no interest in it?

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

Think it’s a case of my post being rather clumsily written - they said it in an lighthearted way not as in ‘We’re going to be miserable arses throughout’. I should have been clearer with that.

Having got married in June, I've regularly had the Wedding Anniversary clashing with World Cup/Euros. This is bearable as long as it isn't a meaningful England World Cup game, such as the clash with Argentina in 1998. WE were out at a restaurant & the waiting staff did put the score up on a blackboard. When we were leaving, it was just gone full time & another couple, whom I didn't know but my wife did, helpfully offered us a lift home. I asked the guy if we could try to get the football on the car radio as extra time was just starting, but the incompetent man could only find a station which was totally incoherent, so he gave up, with me fuming silently in the back seat about how I would have found the right station very quickly. A hugely frustrating drive but we were dropped off home before the end of extra time.

I'd tell them ahead of time that you plan to watch it, and if they feel very strongly that they'd prefer not to, maybe the weekend could be rearranged, or they could find something else to do for a couple of hours.

That's far too sensible a reply.

Thanks for the offer Bloots, but until I know what your wife looks like I’m not going to commit myself to a ‘yes’ or ‘no’.

Why do people always assume that swapping means they'll get the wife and not the husband?...

It’s very simple. Your house, your rules. If you want to watch it, do so.

The clue is in the title ‘wife swapping’.
