I probably know more people who have had/got it than haven't had it at all. Absolute barsteward of a lingerer too. Personally got it a month ago but still it keeps coming back mildy. So many people with coughs.

Nothing clear cut it would seem.
Just found this so sharing for anyone curious....
https://www.theguardian.com/science/2022/nov/19/does-exposure-to-cold-and-flu-vi

.....suggestion in there that covid itself reduces the functioning of our immune systems as a side effect and also that....

"On the other hand, zero exposure to disease-causing pathogens isn’t necessarily good for us either. After Covid restrictions were lifted there was a surge in cases of respiratory syncytial virus — a common cause of acute lower respiratory infections in young children. “Usually, it is a winter virus, but after people started mixing again we saw lots of children with the virus during all seasons,” said Prof Pablo Murcia, a virologist at the University of Glasgow.

Exposure, little and often, may help to refresh the immune system’s memories of commonly circulating bugs, as well as updating them with information about new variants."

Yes, certainly not straightforward.

Or, just do both. Neither will actually hurt you. Unless you're some kind of massive fanny.

Is the evidence now that masks protect getting and spreading infection? I thought it was only the latter as we were told that by wearing them we were protecting others and not ourselves.

You know how modern anarchism is big on communities working together collectively for the common good? Mask wearing and getting your jabs are two of those things.

In terms of the bigger picture regarding healthily functioning communities my belief is that these are more likely to be formed when we can see each others faces and perhaps even hug now and again. But perhaps I'm just being old fashioned.

Any mask is better than no mask for protection but there are different levels of protection. FFP2 and FFP3 masks offer the best protection, and the latter is what medics wear on Covid wards. They are virtually impenetrable.

I understood it to be that if you wear a mask the you are protecting others mostly. However, if both parties wear a mask the it’s double protection both ways. Which is really common sense and there was a meme going about showing peoples pissing on each other when naked, then pissing on each other with one person wearing jeans then attempting to piss on each other with both wearing jeans. Which of course was impossible.

It also depends on the type of mask. The one you could get from Planet blue wouldn’t do much good, but the ones with replacement filters were effective.

Shutting people away was always to me like kicking the virus into the king grass and was never designed to eradicate Covid, but was to manage hospital admissions so that the health service wasn’t over run in the same way it was in Italy.

Look at China now. They tried a zero Covid policy for three years. Welded peoples front doors so that they couldn’t get out. Now they have a country with zero immunity and the virus is running wild.

Weird doctor suggesting that antibiotics have any effect on a virus.

Did you check his qualifications?

My guess is that these are sometimes prescribed if pneumonia or bronchitis has set in after R.S.V.

Just a note on immunity in China, they are having huge issues now for a few reasons:

* There is little to no immunity from previous infection.

* The vaccine they use (Chinese made) is not very good compared to the mRNA vaccines.

* The uptake for the vaccine is fairly low compared to Western countries, especially in the "at risk" groups such as the elderly.

* They went from draconian restrictions to no restrictions instantly instead of sensibly staggering the release from extreme restrictions.

The only thing they really have going for them is that they protected their population from Alpha and Delta which would have been horrible but it was at a ridiculously high price to personal freedoms (an issue in China anyway).

The insane level of lockdown they have implemented and persisted with was clearly the wrong decision and was probably mainly driven by the government liking the control it gave them over the populace.

The US and 5 other countries are now requiring a negative test for travellers from China. On a single flight from China to Milan, 52% of the passengers tested positive for Covid on landing.

The official number of cases documented by China is ~5,000 per day but the realistic number from experts with sources in the country is closer to 1,000,000 a day.

Nothing to disagree with there. However in the 'living with covid' new normal I still feel that as and when to wear a mask is for the individual and not to be mandated.

Personally I think if I was commuting on the tube in London I would wear one still right now. I even considered it for busy pre Christmas supermarkets but ultimately decided against.

For all of those to have recently been laid up, has the illness been labelled if it is not coronavirus or flu?

And China are just now opening their borders for travellers. A number of countries are introducing travel restrictions from China including the US and Italy.

Hopefully there won't be any new CV strands coming with the visitors, given we are not testing arrivals.

A friend of my wife's was living in China when the lockdowns were introduced. Sadly for her she was living on her own in a small 7th floor apartment which for a long period she couldn't leave, with the streets patrolled by armed guards. It's heartbreaking hearing her talk about it, she describes it as prison, and she couldn't get back to the UK for over a year. She's back here now and undergoing counselling.

That sounds horrible, it was an awful policy but I guess not unexpected for a country that also thinks it's fine to put a good portion of an ethnic minority in what are essentially prisons.

It's good she's now getting the help she needs.

There were clearly different ways of handling the pandemic. China wasn't the only country which pursued a zero-Covid policy, New Zealand did too. It relaxed restrictions earlier in the year, and has had a large spike in cases since, but this was at the time when the variant (Omicron) was milder than the original versions. To date, New Zealand has had a cumulative 429 deaths per million compared to the UK's 3,158. And whilst the figures for China may be difficult to ascertain, I am sure it will end up closer to New Zealand than the UK in terms of deaths per million.

I'm not sure exactly but I put it down to flu at the time. I had a Covid test in the drawer so took it and it came back negative, that was on the first day of feeling ropey, but either way it was horrendous. The most ill I've ever been for sure, especially for the middle 48 hours, I could just about muster up a text to work to say I wouldn't be online but even that was a struggle. My temperature was raging to the point where I was having hallucinations at one point and crazy dreams. Hot and cold flushes, sweats etc. Horrendous headaches. I just tried to drink a lot, rest in a dark room sleeping when I could and take some pills every 4 hours.

Still have the remnants of a sore throat and fatigue but they're more of a minor inconvenience than anything else.

Certainly sounds like a very nasty flu. Hope you continue to recover. Had you had the flu vaccine. If so it will have been an unexpected variant.

Thank you. No I haven't had the flu vaccine, I've never had it before and always thought I'm happy to take my chances with it. As a rule I don't like putting vaccines into my body and barely even like taking anything for a headache, although I had all the Covid ones as I thought it was the right thing to do for others / society. I will 100% be getting a flu vaccine every year from now though.

This sounds very much like what I've been feeling. No warning, I just suddenly felt it full on Christmas Morning. Struggled through presents with the wife, slept for 3 hours, struggled through Christmas dinner, slept for another 3 hours, watched a Christmas film (I was given a choice of "The Holiday" or "Love Actually" which wasn't helpful) and then I told the wife to go see her family without me and slept for the best part of next 3 days.

Only other symptom I'd add is the lack of appetite which is still persisting. I've been forcing myself to eat an appropriate amount, but I'm currently just looking at food and feeling full, even though I've barely eaten and I've had no stomach trouble at all.

We tend to be far too conservative on these things, possibly because we have a number of Tory MPs who scream "freedom" when something like compulsory testing is mentioned.

As you say, we shouldn't care what the Chinese think in any subject really.

As it stands, it's unlikely that they will be bringing anything other than BA.7 which is already circulating in the UK. The main concern is that if millions are being infected every day then the scope for nasty mutations increases. This could especially be the case in rural China where they have conceded the healthcare isn't coping and someone with a supressed immune system could be the incubator for something nasty.
