Probably a stupid question but here goes.
The ball was going away from goal and there was a covering defender - if an outfield player has deliberately hand balled it in that position it would have been a yellow card. So why is it red for a keeper? |  | | |  |

If Salah skipped past Pope, he’s got an open goal to tuck the ball into. It was a red card all day long based on the rules. Looks like Newcastle will have to play their 3rd choice keeper in next weekend’s final - Karius, remember him?! Darlow is out on a season long loan, so Gillespie is their other option. That’s not correct. Law 12 states that goalkeepers are subject to the same restrictions and punishments as any other player with regards to handling outside of the area. A handball should only be punished with a red card if it’s a DOGSO. |  | | |

That's a question on which there is very frequently disagreement. I find it to be a pretty woolly phrase to be honest. There was obviously an opportunity to score (you can generally see that from a keeper's desperate actions in handling outside of the box), but how good an opportunity does it have to be? A chance, a half-chance?
The rule doesn't state that it's only a red card if the attacker would definitely have scored, or would have been likely to score. It's just an obvious opportunity. Personally I think it was a relatively clear red, but I don't love the wording of the rule. |  | | |

Ok. Firstly the initial contact with his arm was accidental as he slid in to try and head it but missed. But the 2nd contact was a deliberate save with his arms to stop Salah playing the ball. Blatantly obvious and nothing accidental about it.
Secondly. Rules are rules. Denied a goalscoring opportunity. Unfortunate that he misses the cup final. But actions have consequences. You can't go changing the rules just because you 'feel sorry' for them. | |

Yes but the covering defender cannot use his hands and so it is a much easier opportunity to score. If you switched it around and a defender handballed it as 'last man' (as the phrase goes) then I don't think anyone would question the red, even though the attacker would still have the goalie, who can use his hands in the box of course, to beat. | | | |

The definition of a "goalscoring opportunity" somewhat changes when the keeper is not in the goal.
For example, a covering defender is enough to prevent the scenario being a goalscoring opportunity, but that's with a keeper still to beat. If the keeper is not there, then a covering defender is not enough to prevent the scenario being a goalscoring opportunity, as the striker has an open goal.
So i'd say if the keeper handles deliberately, and the ball would otherwise been in the possession of the attacker, its a red card. [Post edited 21 Feb 2023 18:13]
