Favourite lyric 20:17 - Mar 6 with 5962 views | Coastalblue | Anybody have some personal favourites? I have a few I like, witty, poignant, funny etc. A couple of my favourites. How I wish, how I wish you were here We're just two lost souls Swimming in a fish bowl Year after year Running over the same old ground What have we found? The same old fears Wish you were here and And I guess it's all true what your girlfriends say That you don't ever want to see me again And your brother's gonna kill me and he's six feet ten followed by I see you've sent my letters back And my L.P. records and they're all scratched Editted fir speeling [Post edited 6 Mar 2023 20:39]

Favourite lyric on 20:30 - Mar 6 with 3107 views | Swansea_Blue | Agadoo doo doo, push pineapple, shake the tree Agadoo doo doo, push pineapple, grind coffee I always saw this as us being the pineapple, always pushed and battling against the constraints of life (need to escape the branches of the tree), but only able to do so with caffeine stimulus via the exploitation of 3rd world workers on coffee plantations. Black Lace are deeper than people think. PS. Scary, just seen Keno’s post entitled aga do do - I hadn’t seen it before this. Must be another sign. [Post edited 6 Mar 2023 20:33]

Some of the Squeeze lyrics are amazing, all the more so because they tend to be wrapped up in almost throwaway humour. That's one of my personal favourites too.

Favourite lyric on 21:01 - Mar 6 with 2996 views | BrianTablet | Rainy Night In Soho by The Pogues: I sang you all my sorrows You told me all your joys Whatever happened to that old song? To all those little girls and boys Very simple, but in the context of that song, it gets me right in the heart.

Favourite lyric on 21:06 - Mar 6 with 2975 views | MattinLondon | ‘Time for Heros’ by The Libertines contains some great lyrics but the following are my favourite There's fewer more distressing sights than that Of an Englishman in a baseball cap Also ‘Can’t Stand Me Now’ is also remarkably honest - also by The Libertines. An ending fitting for the start You twist and tore our love apart Your light fingers threw the dark Shattered the lamp and into darkness it cast us No, you've got it the wrong way round You shut me up, and blamed it on the brown Cornered the boy, kicked out at the world The world kicked back a lot f***in' harder now
Favourite lyric on 21:18 - Mar 6 with 2909 views | DropCliffsNotBombs | You said, "Send me stationary to make me horny" So I always write you letters in multicolours Decorating envelopes for foreplay Damn extended metaphors, I get carried away On the back of a natural disaster Fixed with parcel tape and with kids sticking plasters Nothing says "I miss you" quite like War poetry carved in your door with a Stanley knife.

Favourite lyric on 21:53 - Mar 6 with 2815 views | ParisBlue | You're just another coffin on its way down the emerald aisle When your children's stony glances mourn your death in a terrorist's smile The bomber's arm placing fiery gifts on the supermarket shelves Alley sings with shrapnel detonate a temporary hell Forgotten Sons From the dole queue to the regiment a profession in a flash But remember Monday signings when from door to door you dash On the news a nation mourns you unknown soldier, count the cost For a second you'll be famous but labeled posthumous Forgotten sons, forgotten sons Peace on earth and mercy mild, Mother Brown has lost her child Just another Forgotten Son

Favourite lyric on 22:00 - Mar 6 with 2806 views | DJR | When You're Young by the Jam has some great lyrics including the following (and especially the words "the world is your oyster but your future's a clam". "You're fearless and brave - you can't be stopped when you're young You swear you're never ever gonna work for someone No corporations for the new age sons Tears of rage roll down your face But still you say "it's fun" And you find out life isn't like that It's so hard to understand Why the world is your oyster but your future's a clam It's got you in its grip before you're born It's done with the use of a dice and a board They let you think you're king but you're really a pawn." I also liked the directness of the opening lines to their song Time for Truth, which appealed to me as a quasi-rebellious 17 year old struggling against the conformity expected of me. "Whatcha trying to say that You haven't tried to say before? You're just another red balloon with a lot of hot gas Why don't ya f**k off?" [Post edited 6 Mar 2023 22:01]

Favourite lyric on 22:04 - Mar 6 with 2802 views | Steve_M | If good song-writing tells a story then the first verse sets the scene: The screen door slams, Mary’s dress sways Like a vision she dances across the porch, as the radio plays Roy Orbison singing for the lonely Hey that’s me and I want you only

Weller at his best is quite the wordsmith, has the same sort of quality that Difford has with Squeeze, but a fair bit more gritty. I always thought A Town Called malice was a work of wonder lyrically.

Favourite lyric on 23:15 - Mar 6 with 2634 views | SlippinJimmyJuan | Floyd have got some incredible lyrics haven't they. Hard to pick a favourite from just Wish You Were Here, not to mention Time and Shine On You Crazy Diamond. Away from that, the one that hits me hardest is probably this from Joy Division: Someone take these dreams away That point me to another day A duel of personalities That stretch all true realities I'll give an honourable mention to Father John Misty for making me laugh with both: Bedding Taylor Swift Every night inside the Oculus Rift and She says, like literally Music is the air she breathes And the malaprops make me want to f***ing scream

Favourite lyric on 23:40 - Mar 6 with 2604 views | Whos_blue | You hold the gun and I hold the wound. We stand looking in each others eyes. Both think we know what's right, both know we know what's wrong, but we tell ourselves so many many lies. We're not pawns in any game, we're not tools of bigger men. There's only one who can really move us all. It all looks fine to the naked eye, but it don't really happen that way all. Naked Eye - The Who. Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness. Pure and easy - The Who But my dreams, they aren't as empty as my conscience seems to be. I have hours, only lonely. My love is vengeance, that's never free. Behind blue eyes - The Who

Wannabes and losers all trying to get a break They don't give a damn they'll do whatever it takes If they climb the ladder they get to play for higher stakes That's why there's low life in high places Mama things have changed since you were young When you scream in the dead of night Now no one ever comes And the poor man, he's cast as the villain and the thief See him down on the street begging for enough to eat
