The Linekar debacle aside I've long thought motd is another tired BBC relic they are too wedded to. Football consumption has changed, people want brief highlights and no analysis.

I don't need Shearer mansplaining if he thinks something is good tactically.

I disagree it's good to see them analyse the detail. You can fast forward that bit if you don't like it

I always watch it on catch up, and fast forward through the talking.

I’d prefer no crap talking

I assumed everyone did this.
Last night's MOTD was great!

Edit: Also why can't we have an option to turn off the commentary but keep the crowd noise?

Bit off topic.
I'd also like them to give us an option to kill the music on some documentaries.
A lot of Attenboroughs natural history docs have been ruined (for me) by the BBC Philharmonic going full-on Opus Major.

Don't believe a word I say. I'm only kidding. Or am I?

It was actually much better without them, especially Shearer.

I’ve sure they could present it better if given more time, but I must say I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Perhaps this is the way forward for the Beeb? On the plus side, they’d save themselves millions too in salaries.

Agreed he’s painfully boring as much as I respect him as a legend on the pitch. Not a fan of any of them apart from Ian Wright.

For me the optimum format would be commentary but no talking heads.

Then it is competing with online highlights (lacking analysis of the games by well-informed experts who used to play at a high level themselves) and will probably die out.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Didn’t watch it as I am boycotting all BBC programmes until they reinstate Lineker.

I imagine it was weird without the commentary and post-match interviews but the lack of punditry was probably a blessing.

It completely sucked and was over before I'd even finished my Saturday night ritual of rolling a big one for motd.
Worst motd ever!

It was utter rubbish to watch.

I normally watch with my kids so fast forward through pundits but without the game presentation, teams noting changes from last game, injuries, and then the commentary going through things within the game and the little tidbits.

If on my own I watch pundits and like what they add - if could live without that; but think people underestimate just how many people watch MOTD and why they do it, it’s rightly an institution

It's weird, but, unexpectedly, I'm loving it - you can really hear the sounds of the match itself properly, like the thwack of the ball against the keeper's glove when they make a save. Makes it more of an "as if you were there" experience.

Once the novelty wears off I could change my mind tho.

I do wish all broadcasters would 'invent' a red button so we could choose to have commentary or just the natural game/noise. i appreciate that partially sighted/blind supporters need a commentary, but personally can't stand it.
After all you don't get them at the match.

Obviously people love to complain about the pundits (and in fairness if I watch on catch-up I'll skip through) but I think they've shifted a bit over the years from straightforward clips of player X taking shots to show he's good at shooting whilst someone describes them shooting to wider discussion about the teams, players, tactics etc. which I think does add some interest, and if they're not a dullard it can be interesting to hear the viewpoint of someone who actually played the game. Mark Chapman is very good at anchoring in that respect - always thought if Lineker were to leave naturally then he should get the job.

It still rakes in viewers and whilst football consumption has changed quite a bit it evidently remains popular and there wouldn't be such the fall out if that wasn't the case.

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

I stopped watching MOTD years ago because of the extended punditry session it had become, and I just wanted to watch the goals and the key moments in games, not listen to a bunch of ex footballers stating the obvious.

so yeah I liked the new format :) Id probably watch that more often if they added a bit of commentary and post game interviews.

if it goes back to how it was, well Ill stop watching it again.

The only part i really missed was the match stats. I can never understand the 'expected goals' thing though.

My 2014 Sony smart TV (40" iirc) has a 'football' button which partly achieves that by reducing the commentary sound level whilst greatly boosting the crowd & pitch level sound.

I think 8+ years on you might find a TV with that option (edit: ie exactly what you want) if you search, so it would cover all football without the need for you to rely on individual broadcasters.

Quite enjoyed it but tried doing some commentary during the Bournemouth v Liverpool highlights and Mrs SSB was rather less than impressed.
It also meant the very good Tom Hanks movie started a little earlier afterwards so win win.

I watched it.... Personally think that all you really need is some match commentary...The commentator could whizz through the team selection, noting any changes from usual line ups.. Certainly proved, last night, imo, that you don't need 3 or more, over paid hasbeens, spouting guff and talking you through what you've just seen with your own eyes...Quite a few million quid a year , of licence payers money, wasted, in the current format, for me.. I don't need Linaker, Shearer, or that idiot Micah Richards, explaining that someone has just done this or that, when I've just seen it with my own eyes...
I'd sack a few of em, tbh..Set an example. And save some money..

I could see it being popular as a bitesize highlights package potentially, certainly for iPlayer

You didn’t miss much. I managed the first game and then stopped. As I thought, it was just like watching iFollow half time highlights. Personally I prefer the normal whole package. The commentary adds something and it’s much better when you have analysis from ex-pros imo. Just that BBC haven’t got many good ones, but that’s a separate argument!

I suspect if you looked at everyone saying they prefer this version it would be mostly Government-friendly people. It’s obviously not a better this way otherwise TV producers around the world would have latched into it years ago and saved the expense of commentators/pundits.

I don't think a commentator-less highlights show is viable - how are blind viewers meant to understand what is happening?

I don't watch it all. I hate how they've made an industry out of essentially football highlights. I don't have 1:45 to consume a league I don't really care that much about.

I watch highlights on YouTube of any interesting Prem game. Total investment, 7 minutes.

I know that was then, but it could be again..
