Would we be the least disappointed to not go up? 11:58 - Apr 18 with 3908 viewsmattrolow

Hear me out here - I would obviously be gutted if we didn't make it now.

However, what a time to be an Ipswich fan again. Everything is so positive, if we don't go up this year then we've got an unbelievable squad ready to go again next year.

It might be the third tier but what a joy it is to support this team again.

On the flipside - Plymouth are enjoying their run, but judging by their comments they're viewing it as an opportunity they won't get again so there is some pressure and inevitable disappointment if they don't make it.

Wednesday fans - well we know they weren't even happy at the top. They don't have a manager they believe in, the squad is ageing and I don't know how confident they will be if they don't make it this year. Imagine there would be a lot of negativity around.

So therefore is the pressure on us the lowest, in some ways?

Not discounting Barnsley to make it either.

Hope you don't get too excited when we win the league.

I get what you're saying and we probably have one more year of good crowds & nice vibes left in L1 if it all goes wrong ... but I'd be gutted, we are at such a sweet spot with McKenna, this side, the way everything is pointing, and letting things slip now would be squandering a massive opportunity to see this club absolutely fly.

I’ll cope. If not, I can always borrow a “Hey we failed but broke a lot of records in the third tier” t-shirt from some on here who seem incredibly casual about what might happen if we don’t go up.

A full house week after week suggests there's more to enjoying football than just the league a team plays in.

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

I'm not sure anybody is going to be casual about it if we don't go up, I'm sure we'd all be absolutely gutted and would fear the feel good factor grinding down a bit, if not coming to a complete halt.

On the other hand, we're not the Club owned by ME anymore, with Lambert at the helm, even should we stay down then it's not likely this is our one big shot at getting back up.

Don't get me wrong, I would hate to start next season in this crap league again, but if we did, everything would point to it most likely being our last season here as opposed to having just missed our big chance to get out.

No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

Not sure what you mean really but as I have said for months, failure to get promoted this year after everything would be the greatest failure in our history.

I'm putting you down as 'only slightly more pleased than Frimmers and Talkingblues' in the event of this situation happening.

No. Because we don't know the effect it could have.

What players would we lose by not going up...
How many returning fans begin to drift away with another season of league 1 football taking place.

It's great at present. And everyone can enjoy it. But non promotion isn't great and the fact that we've had such a good run lately makes it more annoying that we had 3 months of meh which potentially could be the reason we don't go up.

BUT. Take each game as they come now and hope. We re in the mix. At least we have that for now.

I really don't want to think about it.

If we finish 3rd I think we would have an excellent chance in the playoffs but if we failed that... let's not go there.

21k season tickets sold for next season suggests the crowds aren't going anywhere for next season.

If we don't go up and are towards the top end again we will get the crowds in im sure of it.

Not for me. We've still got a good squad, a good management team who I am confident could make good any player losses, an attractive style of play and big backing from the fans. Things are looking up and still will be even if we don't make it this year.

Nope, for me going into admin was the greatest failure in our history.

I totally get where you're coming from and agree, but I really have had a skinful of this division. The bus-parking, time-wasting hoofers, the pizza trophy, tiny stadiums with small away allocations, 1st round of the FA Cup.

That said, if we can keep the bulk of this squad together and strengthen were necessary, I think lessons should've been learnt and we ought to blast the division out of the water. It could be an even better season than this one.

Need I say it. OGAAT. All should be focused on PV and dealing with the jubilation (or disappointment) that this game brings, let alone what comes in the next and next and next and next games or any other after that.

Of course being top end would keep it going.

But to be top end we would have to hope non promotion didn't result in players or manager leaving etc.

BUT that doesn't even have to be a thought. Right now it's all about these 5 games. That's all that matters tbh.

we might lose 1 or 2, but i would think the players can see what is happening here.

They might get a quick fix elsewhere but are they going to get what they have here?

Good crowds, a club clearly going in the right direction, a manager who is clearly onto something.

They will probably earn more and play a higher level but if we get this right, there aren't going to be many clubs in the championship who can match the overall package with us.

I'd put the surrender relegation under Shambert above that. Also the fact we applauded them down.

Would agree and I take my blue tinted glasses off...

Whilst we're paying fees and have a good squad, a bit of a reality check is that there are clubs paying more in wages than we are for individuals (were perhaps....maybe we changed that landscape in January...and look what's happened since) Bannan is paid a lot more than anyone in our squad and IS different class. We don't have a divine right to promotion...other clubs will feel equally disappointed if they don't make it, which means it's a huge achievement to actually get up.

Wednesday, Derby (tipped for top by many at start) Barnsley (just come down) Peterborough (always there or thereabouts) and obviously a well run Plymouth do have every right to challenge us. Hell, even Portsmouth are paying some big wages and have players like Scarlett (who I rate...just in the wrong team).

Fact is, we're doing it for a squad of players, not just some sporadic big wages, big player.

Not going up is not failure (well it is) but not the catastrophic one people think it is.

Derby were an utter shambles over the summer.
Barnsley had a rebuild under a new manager.
Peterborough tend to be looking at the play offs rather than the top two.
Plymouth are over-achieving, and credit to them for doing so.
Portsmouth have had a bit of a nightmare this season, but would be another play off contender first and foremost.

Wednesday, yes, granted. And we're doing it the right way by investing in the squad rather than one main player. But all that points to us being one of the two best teams in the division come the end of game 46. If we make it up through the play offs then fine, but anything else, considering the quality of player at our disposal and the investment made in January...
