in a letter published in the observer she tells us what she really thinks:
"Racism is black and white.
Tomiwa Owolade claims that Irish, Jewish and Traveller people all suffer from 'racism'. They undoubtedly experience prejudice. This is similar to racism and the two words are often used as if they are interchangeable. It is true that many types of white people with points of difference, such as redheads, can experience this prejudice. But they are not all their lives subject to racism. In pre-civil rights America, Irish people, Jewish people and Travellers were not required to sit at the back of the bus. In apartheid South Africa, these groups were allowed to vote. And at the height of slavery, there were no white-seeming people manacled on the slave ships."
so being jewish is no different from being a redhead.
i expect the letter is all made up. diane says it was just an "initial draft".
And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show
But as someone who was more than happy to go to bat for the Tories and back up their shonky report that structural racism doesn’t exist in the UK, then I don’t see you accepting the point.
And yes, there is anti-Jewish racism but that largely works at a completely different level. And certainly needs understanding and fighting against on those terms.

And what about the Irish who were turned away from renting rooms in the 80s. Comments in poor taste no?

"I think you know what she means."
go on them tell us what she really means.
it was always going to be diane who actually said out loud what you lot really think. anti-semitism as something more minor - much more nuanced just like jokes about redheads.

Is there a single case of racism against Jews that Koonters hasn’t defended? It’s about time his sort weren’t shamed off this board.

....FFS.
Absolutely classic.

As the son of Irish immigrants to Britain in the 1960's, I'd like you know what you think she means?
She's made her point really badly, but in no way has she said "being jewish is no different from being a redhead." That's a hot take you've taken to try to make it sound even worse than it is.
This board seems happier and more together than it's been in a long time, so this is also a weird time to post something just looking to create division.

Same logic as when people trot out “Islam is not a race”.
Note she also said the same about Irish people and Travellers.
Awful comments and well done Starmer for acting swiftly.
Starmer and Labour’s documented hierarchy of racism has largely involved ignoring and sidelining BAME and pretending that people like David Baddiel are the real victims.
Antisemitism is of course a long-standing disease in society and needs to be fought at every step. Jewish people still need our vigilance and protection against racists, there’s no argument there.
But there is, unfortunately, a whole new level of political, social and economic issues facing BAME because of their skin colour. Her underlying point re: “non-whites” is overall right.
And what about the Irish who were turned away from renting rooms in the 80s. Comments in poor taste no?
And in the US context Abbotts wants to force on every situation. Well, this is Ruth Bader Ginsburg talking about 'No dogs or Jews allowed' in the same time period.
And that’s before we even get onto the Holocaust which was the attempted extinction of an entire people. Not just some nasty prejudice.
Once again, David Baddiel’s book “Jews Don’t Count” becomes essential reading.

Why are you focusing on the antisemitism part, I didn’t even mention that. Bit odd.
All you have said there is a load of anti-Starmer whatabouttery.
She’s just downplayed the discrimination of a minority group, what you say is semantics.
It's really not. I have til now never suffered police harassment, for example. Any people that arrive in a richer country in the hope of a better life, will face prejudice by some locals.

we have this endless crap about "smears", but then the mask slips. with dk there's always a "but" when it comes to anti-semitism, always a convenient defence of people saying odious things. "you know what she means" - sadly i'm pretty sure that i do.

You don’t think travellers face prejudice and police harassment then?
