Mark McGuinness 20:28 - May 3 with 8980 views | portmanking | Would he be a value pick to add more CB depth? 1 year left on his deal at cash-strapped Cardiff. Knows the club. Did very well at Wednesday by all accounts.
Mark McGuinness on 08:12 - May 4 with 3014 views | Metal_Hacker | I quite liked him when he was here all things considered ( age,our then current set up etc) and quite obviously had potential My concern with him was his mobility back then though and haven't seen him play for Cardiff further up the pyramid As much as I quite liked him when he was here , I don't think he's a stereotypical KMcK type of player . I just have a Wolfy-esque left footer with perhaps a little more muscle abut him that we would go for - who that might be I've no idea but...

I just happened to think he was a credible option. Wednesday fans raved about him during their stellar run. Bedrock of their tough defence in the winter months. Cardiff fans also have him earmarked as their #1 starting CB next season. Wouldn't cost the earth and has plenty of sell-on potential.

Mark McGuinness on 08:10 - May 4 by Herbivore | Doesn't strike me as a very McKenna move to go for a very young CB on loana as a potential first choice. I think he'll want someone permanent and with a bit more experience. I expect we'll bring in two or three quality loans but they will be higher up the pitch I imagine. |
I agree to an extent as long term I don't think there's a deal that can be done for Doyle permanently as he could well be a regular in the Premiership in a couple of years time. I'd rather we loaned in a young CB who's had the upbringing of being in a top academy club because their taught to be comfortable on the ball - something you need in our side to start attacks, as opposed to a striker on loan though. I do think we loan in another Broadhead type player though - we might even revisit Twine.

Mark McGuinness on 08:59 - May 4 with 2839 views | itfc_bucks | I still don't think we've seen the last of Fridge. Arguably, his game is much better suited to having the greater time that he'll have at Championship level. He's clearly still bothered by the crunch his ankle took at the end of last season, the club seem to have taken the pragmatic approach of keeping him on the injured list and looked to get him fixed properly. I wouldn't be surprised to see him well back in the frame for this season to come.
Mark McGuinness on 09:22 - May 4 with 2780 views | Wallingford_Boy | Always really rated him could see there was a decent centre back in there, despite his young age. I got a lot of stick on here for supporting him in a town shirt.. no surprise there! lol. I would imagine he'd cost £2m+, one of the best young centre backs in the Championship now.

Mark McGuinness on 10:07 - May 4 with 2730 views | itfcjoe | I think he'd be a player who would need to be a nailed on starter to attract him and not sure that would work with him here - ideally it needs to be a left footer. He's a really good player though, and got a serious amount of football under his belt for a young guy which is massive. I liked someone suggestion of Matt Clarke last week who hasn't played much for Boro, we could have an all Suffolk born back 3 with Clarke-Woolfenden-Clarke, plus he is quality as well but had a few back issues. A big, footballing left sided centre back is a bit of a unicorn outside the Championship so be interested to see the route we go

Corr, that back 3 would be quite something, wouldn't it. It still wouldn't surprise me if Edmundson was a more regular starter next season, if fit. For as much as I think Burgess has improved greatly and adapted to how we play, I think the Championship might be too much of a step up and I think Edmundson would suit us more playing higher up. Not convinced on McGuiness personally, but I'm basing that on his loan spell, rather than seeing him play recently.

It wouldn't surprise me if we took the option in Keoghs contract just as a real last ditch back up option, but he'll spend most of his time as one of the over 23 players allowed in the under 21 team/a coaching role.

Mark McGuinness on 10:25 - May 4 with 2655 views | Westcountryblue | McGuinness is exactly the type of player Ashton will want to target. Young player from a cash strapped club that has huge potential sell on value. He did the same to us with Webster. I'd be surprised if he wasn't a name already identified by the recruitment team.

The only problem with that would be him then taking up a slot in the size-limited senior squad. On a side note, I wonder how possible/common it is to loan out coaches to other clubs on a temporary basis in order to gain experience as part of their development?

Indeed. From a 'player trading' perspective he ticks a lot of boxes. Also important to reiterate we last saw him play three years ago (aged just 18/19 and in a dogsh*t team culture). He's since developed and matured considerably and is a physical beast (even more so than Burgess).

Good chance he stays as a coach, but I think squad limits would probably preclude us registering him in the playing squad.

Mark McGuinness on 08:04 - May 4 by Herbivore | I think the criticism of him needed to be tempered by the fact he was very young and in a dysfunctional set up, but that said he did make a lot of basic errors that led directly to us conceding. Pennington was very similar when he was here, did some things well that some fans liked but then would drop a b0llock and pass the ball straight to the opposition centre forward or needlessly stick out a leg to put it in his own goal. McGuiness has clearly shown since that he's got a bit about him with his performances at Wednesday and Cardiff but not sure if he's a McKenna player. |
Spot on, I think his time here gave big Pennington flasbacks. CBs shouldn't constantly have to make last ditch tackles. It just means that they are positionally poor. Supposedly, Maldini said something along the lines of "If I have to make a tackle then I have already made a mistake."

It's notable that Woolfenden doesn't often have to go off his feet to win the ball. Most of the time he is intercepting it and bringing the ball out. That's not to say he can't do the ugly stuff, he's made some vital blocks and clearances in the box, but in terms of one on one defending then more often than not he simply gets to the ball ahead of his man. That's the mark of a quality CB.
