Any pike fishermen on here? 14:48 - May 21 with 3796 views

I’m looking for advice - I’ve got a friend coming over from South Africa in a few weeks and he would like to go pike fishing while he’s here. Where are the best place within 2 hrs of Bury St Edmunds to go?

I'm not really into Pike but my mate used to go to a stretch of river behind Boss Hall Industrial Estate.

Best in winter though for Pike I would have thought ( although I am no expert in the bloody things).

You may struggle unless there's a canal somewhere with resident pike, I'm pretty sure it's close season on the rivers now and lots of lakes that stock pike limit fishing for them to the winter months up until late Feb/March.

Rivers might be open again by then - mid June.

Alternatively fish on the bottom with some dead bait and say you are going for eels.

Pike fishing is more of a cold weather pursuit Vic although with a little more caution can be successful in the warmer months.
Fishing season starts on June 16th in rivers in England and not sure about South Africa but here it is catch and release.
Might be worth contacting a few local angling clubs or fishing tackle shops for more local information.

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

Alton water and Ardleigh reservoir all have good pike by memory.
As already mentioned much better in the winter and I think the season doesn't start until June 16th but not sure about the 2 above its been 20 years since I last fished in the UK

I caught three double figure Pike the best 21lbs many many years ago one winters day at Alton Water, in those days you had to book to be able to fish it.

I know nothing about coarse fishing, but Hintlesham Fisheries have a predator lake with catfish up to 90 pounds. From the picture, a catfish looks to me pretty much like a pike

As well as the June 16th start date for rivers, I don’t think Pike fishing is permitted before October at Alton water, or at least discouraged. Also worth noting you need a National Rod Licence to fish any non tidal waterway in the UK. Failure to produce one can result in a substantial fine.

I've only been river fishing once, but caught a pike. It was at Chatteris (I think), a rather strange town in the the Cambridgeshire fens. I didn't organise the trip but think some sort of licence was required in advance.

Less is more.

Me neither, though there was a raid by EA officers and the police when I was fishing a lake in Somerset. Loads of fat blokes trying to scarper laden down with fishing gear was hilarious. Never did get to ask me for my license though.

I have on multiple occasions, maybe because I used to fish lots of matches and the Environment Agency staff would see it as an easy way to check lots of people in one go. Got told off once because I hadn’t signed it.at least it’s easier now its a National licence. Pre 90’s each water board had its own licence which meant you had to buy multiple ones if you travelled about.

Yep as this gentleman mentions, the gipping is great for pike fishing. especially this stretch behind Boss Hall. I managed my PB here of 25lbs drifting some dead bait down the river. Never tried it in the summer and you did used to 'need' a GAPS membership. I am not sure how the gipping fishes these days as not been in a decade. but i do hear rumours of some unsavoury individuals catching to eat the pike here so i do hope it is still thriving.
