Nothing sodding works... 08:25 - May 25 with 5181 viewsbluelagos

Seen a couple of surveys showing the majority of the public think nothing seems to work anymore.

Clearly there are issues with the NHS, transport, policing and justkce systems...

But there must be areas where we excel? Cheer me up Twtd.

Music. I think this country has a vibrant music scene, has produced some great bands of all styles.

I know this is a lighthearted comment, but I don't even think we're that good at this anymore. You had the big old queue for the Queen, fair play, that was a pretty solid queue. Other than that though? Absolute pandemonium at bus stops, at food counters, at the cinema - no sense of order or decorum. Sickening.

Until Phil and Holly destroyed all that is great about Britain in one cheeky queue jump.

Sickening indeed. 😊

Good call. The creative arts are one area we excel.

Except Morris dancing, that's sh1t.

Then you're paying someone to design the system, re-design it when an executive decides to throw in unrealistic expectations, then re-re-design when it doesn't work or falls over at the first backup. Finally, pay a huge fine when all the data is stolen.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Much cheaper to deploy a chatbot than employ any number of people, even if outsourced.

Oscar Wilde was right.

"You should try everything once, except incest and Morris dancing"

He obviously wasn't heard in Norfolk where I gather Morris dancing is extremely popular.

The Covid vaccine being a great example

Quite, among many others historically and currently. The UK punches well above its weight and has some of the best and brightest people and facilities to advance humankind in this area.

News this morning suggests we are good at making car batteries.

What irks me more than anything is that it is impossible to get through to customer services at any large company of which you are paying money to.

Mobile phones, banks, Royal Mail, Mortgage companies etc etc etc, you name it.

It was bad enough pre covid but covid seems to have given the green light for firms to really cut down on their customer services.

And even when you can get a phone number ------- "I'm sorry but we are experiencing a higher volume of calls than usual"

No you bloody well are not, it's always this long a wait, you just need to get more fecking staff.

We're pissing in the wind in terms of car battery production. No UK owned companies in the top 10 suppliers globally. China is way out in front, followed by countries like South Korea, Japan and the US.

Agree on help lines though.

Yet we seem to be hell bent on making it harder to attract the best and brightest.

I can't believe nobody's mentioned the obvious thing we excel at - cheesemaking.

I think the UK is still very attractive for people in the industry, but certainly ludicrous to put the completely avoidable barriers up that we have over the last few years. Sickening.

We are pretty good at cheese. You've got to go a long way to find one better than a nice mature cheddar.

And pub culture, as an extension of that.

One of the things I missed most about living abroad was a proper pub. Beerhouses, sports bars, cafe type set ups are alright but none of them get close to a proper British pub.

Scotch as well. I don't think it would even be arguable that we're the best whisky producers. That goes for other spirits too - our scotch and gin is renowned all over the world.

So if all else fails and when the apocalypse comes, I'll see out my days in my bunker getting pissed on scotch and eating cheese.

Indeed, and when anywhere tries to replicate it they invariably get it horribly wrong. Nothing like a proper British boozer.

My Dad was constantly saying this on more days than not, every year from the 1950s till he died in the 1980s.

We're very good at moaning about it but not voting in governments that will actually do something about it - with modest exceptions for a couple of Labour govts.
