Wouldn't have thought so, there's no easy way back from raising rebellion (unless you have an unassailable powerbase and often not even then). Prigozhin may just be an acceptable sacrifice, especially given he's gone off script. Shoigu and his mates may want to smash Wagner, then absorb the remains into their own organisations (yes, the head of the Russian military is running a private mercenary group on the side).

You’d imagine in any normal world, Putin’s allies would squash him like a fly. We don’t appear to be in a normal world though. How many are switching sides? Does Putin bring forces back from Ukraine to fight them? Video from Prigozhin here [Post edited 24 Jun 2023 6:43]

And now demanding Putin’s senior Generals come to him or he will bring his forces to Moscow The likely outcome here is Putin gives Wagner group more authority, rather than a challenge to Putin’s leadership in the old fashioned way

He chose his words very carefully. He presents a reasonable man, everything is normal, we are supporting our country image. Putin cannot leave it and neither can his generals - but how do they deal with it and what is the risk of mutiny in the ‘real’ Russian army? Given they’re just cannon fodder and are now hearing mixed stories, there is a possibility this could unravel for Putin. I guess a lot depends on how loyal Prigozhin’s people are to him.

One thing I took from the Igor Sushko tweet of Prigozhin talking was the comment about poorly equipped soldiers and it had me wondering about the scale of desertion likely in the Russian Army. After all it was a wave of desertion during the First World War that contributed to the success of the Russian Revolutions in 1917. I doubt that in the current climate deserters are going to find it easy to go home to Moscow or St Petersburg though, is Prigozhin offering them some form of reintegration into an armed force in Rostov ?

Indeed, especially as so much of the country is unaware of even what's going on over the border.....meaning he potentially exposes himself .... ooh what a thought..shiver.. [Post edited 24 Jun 2023 7:25]

So will Putin open his arms in friendship, all friends together fighting evil etc or declare him enemy of the state? As a dictator, doesn’t it have to be the latter?

Windows locked, ground floor only, no umbrellas, door handles wiped, nosebag tested by a ‘volunteer’. That should cover it. Oh, and cancel the personal pension direct debit. No point in wasting good roubles.

He's been very careful with his words recently, blamed almost everyone in Russia apart from Putin earlier in the week and seemed to suggest the invasion was wrong but very much going after the generals.....who knows what he'd thinking

Putin came across as being very vulnerable imo. I was expecting a rant blaming the west for backing Wager in a coup. Far too honest in his public address, which must lead people to question his grip on power.

Squash him with what, tho? By positioning himself in Rostov, it negates use of the air force, who would have to bomb one of their own cities. Urban fighting is notoriously difficult and costly. There would be many civilian casualties. It couldn't be done with conscripts and policemen. Properly-trained troops and heavy equipment would need to be brought up from either the front line (weakening it) or from a long distance away. Rostov will have food, fuel and probably ammunition to withstand a lengthy siege. Plus it controls vital bridges over the Don. In terms of public opinion, Putin has allowed civil war to come to the streets of Russia.
