Just one good partnership away here.

Alternatively, add two wickets to the total and it looks like a defeat...

Indeed. It's not a huge total and we got off to a fairly decent start, so a 50 partnership suddenly gives the game a very different complexion.

It's so frustrating from Crawley. Played some nice shots, scored at a good rate, but he just can't help nicking off from shots he doesn't need to be playing. At some point he has to start converting nice looking 30s and 40s into match winning knocks.

Yes, the ability is all there, and his runs here might still be crucial, but he does really need to build on it.

Feels like Root and Brook could be a critical partnership, if they can stay together for a while the. The target starts looking more attainable. If….

Tightrope innit.

I'm still annoyed we're not looking to take a 3-0 lead.

FFS. What the fk was that shot?

Him and Brook were just looking comfortable, no need to go for that ball.

Amazing how 120 odd can look like a stroll, then a hill climb in one ball.

Idiotic cricket from our best and most experienced batsman. 15 minutes for lunch, looking set, ball not doing all that much, and he chases one down leg. Ridiculous.

Root has been really poor in this test, both with the bat and in the field.

All about bottle now. Cummins and Lyon had it at Edgbaston. Let's see if England have it.

I'm trying to comfort myself by counting Moeen's wicket as a 'nightwatchman' dismissal.

He’s got enough credit in the bank to dismiss it as a short dip but something isn’t right with him. He looks so nervous and edgy (no pun intended) rather than the fluid player he can be. He was the same at Lords.

I suspect he would be a lot more measured in his approach in a different side. I think the environment and new ethos of this England camp is making things muddled upstairs.

A couple too many wickets that season to be anything like comfortable but the runs scored in that session still make it decent for England I think. Despite the dismissals of Crawley and Root, this does look a bit more circumspect than some innings recently.

England really should win from here but I won’t feel comfortable about it at all, doubt I’m alone.

Its not often that I shout "what the Fook was that" at the telly when watching Cricket, but that was one.

Why didn't he just let it go? We've all the time in the world, he'd already been taking risky runs.

Sigh.

Here we go again, Crawley just needed to stay in and keep picking up runs. Third time he had gone for a ball he didn’t need to.

158 runs seems an awful lot at the moment. Brook needs to play well now, crap series from him so far.

Crap is unfair. He got a 50 in the last test and a 40 odd in the 1st. Averaged over 30 so far in the series.

Not what we'd hoped but not crap.

Agree although at least one of thems our nr 8. Almost like a night watchman situation but these two plus bairstow need to take it home you feel.

This has been a much more convincing innings than the flaky one at Lord’s though, he was pretty fortunate to get that many then and Australia seemed justified in claiming he couldn’t play the short ball. He can play better than that as he has shown today.

Hope he really builds on that now.
