Smaller purchases like a phone I agree, but I mean a 35k MG is fairly easy to avoid buying…edit and you missed the point that it’s directly owned by the Chinese state whereas many other purchases go to private companies.

I think there is quite a lot of criticism about the plight of uyghurs. Indeed, the Minister of State for Security, Tom Tugendhat, and people like Iain Duncan-Smith, are very on the ball when it comes to China.
I might add that I sense some of the criticism of China is connected with the ongoing battle between China and the US for global hegemony.
But as regards the MG, I didn't even know it was owned by the Chinese government, and would have no intention of buying one anyway. [Post edited 28 Jul 2023 11:23]

if you're very rich it's easy to take the high ground on minority rights - you can look enlightened even whilst benefitting from the extremes of economic inequality. only when championing minority rights comes into conflict with becoming even richer is there a problem. |  |

Nobody would turn down the money that these footballers in Saudi are being offered. I hope that everybody who is condemning players taking this money knows to the penny where their wages originate?

For the average man in the street it’s very difficult to turn that down, but he isn’t that, him and his descendants are set for life, as someone said he has a contract worth £20m over 2 seasons already remaining.

One thing I would agree with is that it's very easy for people to say they wouldn't take it when they know there is no chance of being offered a deal like that.
The reaction to the world cup in Qatar was an interesting watch. There were plenty saying they wouldn't watch a minute and i'm sure many didn't. There were quite a few whose stance softened the closer it got.
There's also the chance Henderson doesn't care that much about LGBT rights and just went along with it because he felt he had to.
I doubt he's losing any sleep over the reaction. He's probably already working on a plan to clean his image once he comes back. | |
