What if we met the hype? 10:55 - Aug 21 with 4533 views | GeoffSentence | There has been a a lot of hype for the this Town team in the media, typified by Sky Sports News creaming themselves over how fantastic we have been on our return to the Championship before we had even kicked off in our third game. There is some basis to it in the way we finished off last season but it is largely hyperbole at the moment. But what if we did match up to the hype and not only make a good attempt at promotion, but by some magic actually get back to back promotions and end up in the Premier League. We'd surely have to overhaul the squad if we wanted to survice, or would being there for a single season and getting the parachute payments be enough in its own right at this point?

What if we met the hype? on 11:47 - Aug 21 by BiGDonnie | It's not by magic we're winning games at this level. We have the players capable and a management team who excel. We're up for the fight this year. Not many Town fans seem to understand just how good we are. It's weird. Instead of looking for negatives, or comparing us to other teams, get behind the boys, have some fun and let's see where we end up. |
Quite. This isn't Lambert lucking into promotion playing the likes of Judge, Wilson, Nolan and Fatty Norbuckle, this is a highly drilled team playing under a hugely competent and hard-working manager. [Post edited 21 Aug 2023 13:13]

What if we met the hype? on 14:31 - Aug 21 with 904 views | PioneerBlue | I’m sticking with my range of P5-P12 and most likely for me is P8. This is a very good team, love what they are doing and how they are doing it and there are some squad members that can and are doing a good job backing up. For me a lot of things have to go right for us to be competing come Feb, March, and April. Not out of the question but we don’t even know how this team (let alone fan boys) react to a couple of poor results everything is new at this level. The only thing that holds me back from being more bold is the quality of the squad which could take a 1-2 more windows to really build. Anyway, if the chance was there we have to take it in the way we have started. No team these days is ready for the prem, it’s too big a jump for all clubs. You face a very tricky challenge in making significant recruiting decisions and disrupting your whole team simply in search of maintaining status versus minimising investment and maximising revenue for the first promotion back under current tv deal money. There is no waiting around for the perfect moment. You take it when it comes, it may not come around twice.

What if we met the hype? on 11:05 - Aug 21 by J2BLUE | No one is ever ready for the Prem. We could build for 10 years in the Championship and still not be ready. I find it incredible that people say they would rather we didn't go up this season. Makes zero logical sense. [Post edited 21 Aug 2023 11:15]

A appreciate your point of view, and this evening I feel you are probably right and I am an idiot! I'll probably flip-flop in the morning.

I don't know, we are Ipswich. When we get promoted we win the league or qualify for Europe. Need to be ready for that, and not get relagated because we don't have the squad depth. Also, we don't want to end up like Man City. Blue Moon, You got promoted too soon. Now your going back down, and Europe's coming to Town. What ever happened to City anyway?

What if we met the hype? on 11:20 - Aug 21 by Herbivore | From memory, other teams that have won back to back promotions (thinking Saints and Scum, can't remember if Wolves were back to back or had a year down here first, think Sheff Utd were here for an extra season) have generally done well in the Prem. There's a winning mentality and a lot of momentum that comes with 2 years of success. We'd need to add to the squad but we've got some players who I'd back to be able to compete at that level and some others who might well surprise us. I mean, who thought lower league puddings like Rickie Lambert and Grant Holt would do well in the Championship, let alone more than hold their own in the Prem? |
Examples of back-to-back promotions to the top division I can find (the season listed is the first season in the top division) are: 1894-95 Liverpool - relegated (bottom) 1895-96 Bury - stayed up (11th) 1899-00 Glossop - relegated (bottom) 1909-10 Tottenham - stayed up (15th) 1936-37 Charlton - stayed up (2nd) 1968-69 QPR - relegated (bottom) 1985-86 Oxford - stayed up (18th) 1987-88 Derby - stayed up (15th) 1988-89 Middlesbrough - relegated (third bottom) 1990-91 Sheffield United - stayed up (13th) 1991-92 Notts County - relegated (second bottom) 1999-00 Watford - relegated (bottom) 2011-12 Norwich - stayed up (12th) 2012-13 Southampton - stayed up (14th)

Does rather show it's a rare feat but if we achieve it we might do okay.

What if we met the hype? on 10:58 - Aug 21 by J2BLUE | This is a bit like worrying what you would spend lottery winnings on. Going up at any time would be amazing for the future of the club. |
This! How could anyone say getting into the EPL be a problem? Think we are getting ahead of ourselves a bit though. Luton anybody or indeed the Budgies? It's a step on the way where parachute payments help you build sustainably. A promoted club just needs to spend/sell sustainably. Early days but Everton look shaky, it'd be good to ensure another Blue team is in that league.

Not very logical thinking is it? 😅 Today we lack funds due to FFP and we lack status due to time spent in the wilderness. A solidifying season would nudge the needle at best for 24/25, unless we're able to sell one or two for silly sums like Coventry. Yet one undignified season in the PL and we return in 25/26 as a force at this level again - and that's the worst case promotion scenario.

What if we met the hype? on 10:16 - Aug 22 with 592 views | ChampionsofInnsbruck | Sheffield United managed to get up and stay up with a number of players who were promoted twice, but yes we would have signed 5 or 6 Premiership calibre players and drop off a handful who are not good enough. Norwich even did it under Lambert, and again stayed up. It is not impossible.
What if we met the hype? on 11:34 - Aug 22 with 560 views | Nthsuffolkblue | I was thinking about this and last season we signed players with Championship experience and quality. I am sure we are now looking to do the same with Premier League players and struggling to do so. Of course if we get promoted great and the players who get us there will have shown they have the potential to step up. However we could do with a few already here with some experience at that level. There's still time to get 1 or 2 in and repeating the pattern of last January with 3 key signings would potentially see us have as many as 5.

What if we met the hype? on 12:47 - Aug 22 with 529 views | IPS_wich | Brighton - now entering their seventh season in the Premier League Bournemouth - now entering their seventh season in the last nine Brentford - now entering their third season. Well run clubs, with a similar/smaller fan base. Each promoted with an outstanding manager and limited budgets compared to the other clubs around them in the championship. If them then why not us.
