Whats the most youve paid for a pint locally? 17:45 - Sep 17 with 7436 viewsnodge_blue

I paid £6.25 for a pint of estrella in st andrews brew house, Norwich.

The barman even apologised when after pouring it and i went how much?

Other lagers turned out to be more like 5.50. Maybe a tax on the strength?

If you want a cheap pint, you should try a Spoons. And if you want a grand one, you should try the one in Ramsgate, which used to be a concert hall, overlooks the sea and is the biggest in the country. I've visited it a couple of times.

Are you sure he wasn't just apologising for serving Estrella instead ;)

It's a tax on brand recognition.

Norwich is expensive for beer thesedays, locally I've paid 5.50 for cask ale in a pub, 6 at a beer festival, but it was 12% and rare

That's outrageous, especially given that place has the atmosphere of a wake.

Watched the Barnsley playoff final there. Had the tin tent near Butley. Not a bad atmosphere that day.

I was there a couple of months ago, and whilst I didn't go for a beer found things in Norway not that expensive compared to the UK, which was in complete contrast to my last visit there 25 years ago where the prices were (relatively) astronomical.

As it is, this suggests the price of an ordinary 0.5 litre beer in a bar or cafe ranges between £6 and £7.50.

https://thenorwayguide.com/cost-of-beer/

I may be misremembering but I am sure the cost of a beer in Norway 25 years ago was about £5.

Actually there is huge variations but imported beers can cost anything up to 13 quid at today's exchange rate. I know a bloke who drinks a local craft beer and a 0.6 L bottle, in a bar, is about 17 quid. Local lagers are anything from a fiver in a dive bar, to a tenner. The kroner is really weak right now so, prices don't seem as bad as they were previously.

The Norwegian kroner is very weak against the pound right now, which will explain it. I remember when I moved here, I nearly cried when I first went into a pub.Back then, the kroner was very strong.

Oof. Guiness is £4.80 in my local gastropub, but things like Madri and Peroni are now £6-6.50, which isn't unusual. Although happy hour in a stick-floored place down in town can still find pints for under £3 during specials.

Paid 2 quid for a small bottle of water in the Apex last night. Daylight robbery, at least Think Floyd were superb.

You could have asked for a glass of tap water.

Small and medium sized gig venues are often paying 70 to 80% of gross ticket sales to the act. They are relatively large buildings, usually in central locations, are hit with high Business Rates, have huge electricity costs for all those lights, amps PA etc, and can often only attract a decent crowd two nights of the week, usually sitting empty all day.

Professional sound and light equipment is expensive, staff need to be paid a fair wage, and it is an industry that is reliant on constant marketing.

It's a business with very high capital and staffing costs, with very few ways to increase revenue. The bars keep them afloat.

£2 for a bottle of water or yet another venue shuts?

No ones going out for a session then are they in Norway at 17 quid.

I got the first round the other night, and Im not really that fussed if I get one back as such, but it's at the stage where we need to need to buy our own. I said to my mate - you're having fosters next time!

The guy who drinks the 17 quid beer can afford it tbh. Rounds isn't a thing over here.

Genuine question as i haven't been to the UK for 20 years.... is tipping just for a beer poured sitting at the bar expected? Now being a senior citizen (pensioner) i tend not to drink in bars so much but yesterday wanted to catch some NFL games. $4 for the cheapest pint (less pour than UK) and after 2 beers plus 7% tax and expected dollar a drink gratuity cost me $11 as I didn't pick up the coins after paying cash!

Tipping in pubs is not expected here. I've bought bar staff a drink on occasion as a thank you for good service but generally tips aren't expected. If you're somewhere where there's table service then that's a bit different although in pubs it won't be frowned upon to not tip it you're only getting drinks at your table.

Is Madri really being marketed in the same bracket as Peroni? I thought it was more on par with Carling & Fosters?

About fifteen years ago I in the states for work and me and my workmates all went out for a meal. None of the staff wanted to wait our table - which they made very clear - as apparently brits over there (think Europeans in general) have a reputation for not tipping well.

They bullied some 16 year old to serve us - we made a point of tipping really well which really annoyed his workmates.

Madri is all marketing, its the perfect example, MolsonCoors wanted a european style lager to compete with Moretti and Peroni, in the so called Mediterranean lager mould so came up with Madri, it sounds Spanish, but it's a completely invented brand, it's brewed in the UK, some even think its just Coors light with a few more hops.

They chucked aload of money into promotion of it and it appeared instantly in 7500 bars in the UK almost overnight.

It even coined a new name for phenomenon called the Madri effect.

And yes the charge £6 for it, Brits reminiscing about Spanish holidays lap it up, and it's completely just about marketing
