I honestly think they’ll go on a run and make the playoffs. Which if we fall into, probably won’t make for a happy ending.

That's the spirit.

I can’t fcking wait

Get in a scummy pub about 8am, have the missus moaning how early I’m going out, see us beat them for the first time in forever, wave them off, then being out for the duration for a town win/Xmas beer up.

Then potentially die Sunday.

This.

Michael Duff tried the line that a derby is just another game ahead of Cardiff v Swansea earlier in the season. He even went as far as saying he’d rather lose if it meant they could have a better season overall. The silly twot. No surprise, it went down like a bucket of cold sick. And then they played like they wanted to lose too.

I can’t see KM and the guys making that mistake. They’ll know how much it means.

I think the optimal situation is that you want your manager to be calm and collected, but also join in a little bit with the celebrations if we do well.
KM has adjusted his management style well with a bit of experience. He used to try and be totally reserved and not really react to a goal or big moment, but now he is celebrating to a suitable degree without totally losing his cool.
KM absolutely needs to remember that it is only 3 points in terms of team selection and the energy that goes into preparation etc., but he should harness the special atmosphere and make sure that the players treat it as an important game to get a result in in addition to the 3 points.

….is fairly solid in that respect. Hanley, McLean and Barnes. Particularly Barnes.

But 2 of that 3 have been injured for months and are only just making their way back.

Apart from that they are mainly made up of flashy youngsters and foreigners (Rowe, Sara etc) who are decent on their day, but rarely have that day.

We need to make sure we are prepared for the almost inevitable absence of Morsy, they are particularly weak in the central midfield area and we should be able to control the game from there.

Jonny Rowe is not a flashy youngster, he is a very good player. The only player I’d take from them.

Apparently got injured for the England U21s so they’re sweating on his fitness now. That would be a huge thing if he missed the derby. I think he is their only threat.

Sara I agree with. Hope he plays because he may look good to the budgies but think he is part of the problem. No work ethic at all. Against the speed of our breaks he could be a real liability to them and Mass and Sammy will ensure he doesn’t have the time on the ball to be a threat.

I've watched them a few times this season. I think Sargent would be a good backup to Hirst, Rowe is an exciting runner of the ball but lacking in other departments, might be worth developing as a backup. Sara I concur, not enough mobility. There's nothing else there.

In a sense there is nothing to lose because we are in a far better position and the only thing they have to brag about is that they have been a bogey side for us since before they last dipped into League 1. It is our chance to put that bogey behind us, but if we fail to do so, the bogey remains.

It is the best opportunity for a long time for us to show on the pitch we are now a better side. Of course, form goes out of the window for the derby and we might get a ref who will make a shocking decision and their players might suddenly decide that one is a match they will put a good shift in for, but there is every chance we could put on a show. I am hoping we can make it a demolition derby.

I wonder how McKenna will get on with it being his first derby as a manager. I wonder who their manager will be by then.

A bogey team in a snot and vomit shirt.

You've lived in Ipswich your whole life, mate. Other people have different experiences than you. It's not hard.

?! ..... but it's the scum?

I've worked in Ipswich but never lived there, though I have lived in Norwich..

It would be ridiculous not to take that really. As desperate as I am to beat them, if we took 15 points from the next 18 available then we would be in a ridiculous position going in to that big Christmas double header against the 2 clubs (currently) closest to us. The sort of position that could probably allow us to lose them both.

Come full time against Stoke on NYD we'll be sat on anything from 39 points (10 consecutive defeats) to 69 (10 wins). The most likely scenario is something starting in a 5, and if that's over 55 we'll have done very well IMO, from what looks a tricky run of 10 games.

Can we take 17+ points from that 10? You have to look at the home games against Millwall, Coventry, Norwich and QPR as good opportunites to scoop up a chunk of them if we can maintain our excellent home form. A couple of wins from WBA, Boro, Watford, Leeds and Stoke away isn't impossible. Leicester home becomes a bit of a free hit. They've not looked great the last couple of weeks and it'll be interesting to see how they respond to that, but I do think they've got a ridiculous amount of quality and I can't see them not getting promoted.

I think we probably need 6 points from the next 3 to set us up nicely for the rest of that set until the next break. I think we can do West Brom next weekend, I'm looking forward to it. Got a night out in Brum planned for after and a curry house booked with some mates so it should be a good day.

So how are we feeling now?

Always thought this 10 game ‘block’ from WBA through Stoke was tough, as we all did. Away trips to WBA, Boro, Watford, Leeds & Stoke. 5 very tough places to go, I thought we could win a couple and we have. For all the talk of 2ppg we need to remember not all fixtures are born equal, and 7 points from those 5 isn’t a bad return.

5 at home in that period; Millwall, Coventry, Norwich, Leicester, QPR. I’d say 3 good results yielding 7 points, a disappointing point against Norwich although IMO it was a good performance that warranted more, and a poor day against QPR, albeit with selection circumstances going against us.

I asked for 17 points, we got 16. It’s not a bad return and sets us up nicely with a bit of a break now before we host Sunderland. There’s headwinds for sure, not least the form of Southampton, Burgess going away with Aus (although Fridge was very good today), Morsy missing for the next 2 league games and the biggest of all being Hirst out for the foreseeable. So critical to how we play, and the 1 area where we’re not well served with like for like replacements. But it’s also a chance to take stock, hit reset a little bit and with the transfer window upon us for some reinforcements.

20 games left now. 12 wins would put us on 91 points if we lost the other 8. A handful of draws from the other 8 might just be the difference between 2nd or 3rd. One of those wins coming against Southampton would of course be huge.

We almost need to forget how this season has evolved and draw a line under it. We have a mini season of 20 games now, we’re 3 points above 3rd (who still have to come to PR) and we’ve come through a horrible period of fixtures. We’ve also ticked off some really tough away trips.

Everything to play for, starting with 3 points against Sunderland. COYB.

Happy with the points gained, not so with the injury to Hirst. We need reinforcements and quickly. Sure the backroom team are all over it.

A quick whip through those again now and 17 is what I came up with too, if judged in the context of how well we were doing before that run. Given that context and how we feel now, I'm surprised now that we actually got 16 out of it, which just goes to show how well we are doing overall.

Near enough two weeks off the important stuff now - time to get everyone rested and hopefully integrate a new striker or two as early as possible. Add a fit Davis, and I don't think we need too much else, although another 10 plus a replacement full back if necessary would be nice, and wouldn't moan at any other upgrades!

Yeah, pretty bullish still, I'd say. If Southampton can draw with that rubbish up the A140 they are far from invincible, and we have the superpowers of KMc, spirit and momentum.
