Gents, get yourself checked, PLEASE. It's important. 17:29 - Nov 17 with 10466 viewscbower

I was disgnosed with prostate cancer today at a level that may spread. Will have a bone scan now before treatment is decided on. I'm 56 and only got checked after being brow-beaten into it. So fellas ( of a certain age), PLEASE GET CHECKED OUT (yes I'm shouting I know)

Very sorry to hear about this, but very sound advice to get checked out because often there are no symptoms at all for prostrate cancer. I had a routine health check & blood test for various things a few months ago, and the PSA count was just above normal (just over 5). The doctor called me in for a rectal check - a bit unpleasant - but fortunately he didn't think there was any abnormality. A further blood test 6 months down the line, and the count is slightly higher (over 6). Apparently this is still only just above normal for my age (68). I have another blood test next month. If it has continued to rise, then I'll be referred to a urologist, probably for an MRI scan. I'm not unduly worried, but it's a concern. As you say, get checked, as catching it early gives the best possible outcome.

Really sorry to hear that CB - hope any treatment you have does the job for you.

As people say, getting checked is vitally important, so don't ignore those requests from your GP/NHS for body MOTs/checkups, etc, it is so important to catch anything early.

Thank you all for your best wishes. Bone scan on Monday, fingers crossed it's just the prostate and I’ll go from there.
But please gentlemen, get checked like I said.

Well done for sharing and shouting out!

I too had Prostate cancer back in 2015, and am alive and well. I made a documentary film about my journey to help men and their partners.Lots of practical tips to help with treatment, side effects and recovery. It has gone global. Maybe we should approach ITFC to help promote the early tests, as 1 in 8 men will get it.

I imagine it doesn’t sting until they get up the elbow, does it? .

Good post, cheers. I’m going to call the GP on Monday and get checked out, as I’m not feeling quite right.

I know you are only joking and humour is needed in these situation but i personally don't think comments like that help. This is exactly the sort of thing that puts off men getting checked out, joke or not. There is a stigma about it.

To the OP, i'm so so sorry to hear of your diagnosis. FIngers crossed for the scan and that you get the best treatment possible and beat this bas'ard of a disease. You can do it!

In a more humorous vein, I'm not sure 'thumbs up' is what one wants to see in a thread about getting your prostate checked!

Don't know how much they have told you my friend but I got diagnosed back in 2019. Went to see my doctor, nothing to do with prostate problems and she happened to ask if I had had my prostate checked recently. I said yes a couple of years ago. Turned out it was five years ago, so around 2014. She did the old had up the rear and said she couldn't feel around one side, so she requested a scan which showed dark patches. I then had a biopsie which confirmed prostate Cancer. I was given a choice as it was only level 1 that I could have treatment or go onto a wait and see, which meant a PSA test every three months. By mid 2022 my PSA had gone from around 1 to over 5 so they indicated I needed to start treatment. I then went on a course of hormone therapy, it gives you tender nipples. This lasted from November 2022 until April 2023 as I had a cruise booked and they didn't want to start Radiotherapy just before my cruise as they said it could spoil it. So I started treatment in April for 5 weeks, 20 treatments. When you have radiotherapy it's just a case of laying still on a treatment table. They cover your manhood and you will have previously been prepped with a CT scan where they put dots either side of you and one in the middle I presume in the location of the prostate as this is where they line up the radiotherapy machine. The machine revolves around you and it takes no more than around 10 minutes per treatment. You may have more treatments than myself or possibly chemotherapy if you are advanced. Some patients when I was having treatment had double what I had. I wish you all the best and try to be positive. I know it's hard as I had days when I was a bit low. Added to that you are right about getting things checked as many men have problems but either feel embarassed or that it's not a manly thing to do.

OldFart71. I hope everything is ok with you now. Thank you so much for sharing that with us. The more that share the more of an impact and more likely men won't feel so embarrassed about talking about it. Thanks again and wish you well.

I was told by my doctors surgery at 45 years old that having a health check every 5 years was vital.
Then COVID came and it became impossible to get the 5 year health check.
3 years after COVID I finally got another health check. 8 years after my last.
But it doesn’t seem as important as pre COVID times.
I changed doctor and surgery in 2019, and have visited a few times mainly for painful back etc.
Yet to see or hear from my doctor…..or see a doctor in the surgery. Always see a nurse or nurses around but not doctors.
Doctors surgery’s aren’t like they once was.
The service isn’t like it once was.

I made a doctors appointment middle of last week. As I’m suffering badly from a prolapsed disc that I 1st encountered 20 odd years ago. But upto 3 weeks ago hasn’t caused any real problems since.
Currently in a lot of pain, and as I work as a sub contractor am very concerned about losing work time, which so far, somehow I’ve managed to avoid.
The earliest appointment given was mid December.
I only require some strong pain killers and anti inflammatory.
I’m currently visiting a osteopath at £50 per half hour each week.
Just require a small helping hand from NHS but find it frustrating and near on impossible.
