Suffolk Artist 08:50 - Jan 18 with 5281 views | yorkshireblue | I moved house a few months ago and am reliable informed that we need something to hang on a large wall we have. I like the idea of having something from a Suffolk artist (to offset my Yorkshire stone house, in Yorkshire...) but literally have no idea where to start looking. Does anyone have any recommendations? I know nothing about art or photgraphy so no idea what style etc. we'd be looking for - think I fall into the "I'll know it when I see it" bucket, which isn't helpful...
Suffolk Artist on 09:10 - Jan 18 with 4382 views | thebooks | Maggi Hambling is an obvious Suffolk artist. This is an Ipswich company that does some nice prints (but the art’s not Suffolk-themed): https://reignandhail.co.uk/

Suffolk Artist on 09:45 - Jan 18 with 4233 views | kiwiblue | John Cooke from Dent but originally started painting in Bungay where he taught me in the 60s. Died a few years ago but I believe his painting are available . I have two great scenes of lanes around Dent Dale. Alternately check out Southwold Gallery on line for a wide range. Where are you in Yorkshire?
Suffolk Artist on 09:46 - Jan 18 with 4221 views | UB9Blue | I have a couple of paintings by Paul Evans who is based in Lavenham https://www.paulevans-artist.co.uk/ The paintings are quite expensive but his website has a link to his available prints which are cheaper
Suffolk Artist on 09:47 - Jan 18 with 4210 views | longtimefan | You could look at Ania Hobson. Up and coming local artist with a fair degree of international exposure now. Not sure the style is what your wife would be looking for

Suffolk Artist on 09:48 - Jan 18 with 4208 views | soupytwist | Here's a list of Suffolk-based artists who open their studios every June to display their work https://www.suffolkopenstudios.org/artists/ Could be someone in there who does what you're after. A couple of friends of mine got married about 10 years ago and for their wedding present asked people to contribute to the cost of them commissioning an artist they know to paint a picture of the Orwell from the Shotley Peninsula. The artist at the time only did it as a hobby but is now a full-time artist. I could ask them for the artist's name if you like.

I'm near Leeds. The 4-0 was not a great day...
Suffolk Artist on 10:26 - Jan 18 with 4056 views | ElephantintheRoom | A number of local artists used to have exhibitions during the Aldeburgh festival - i suspect they still do. A bloke called Ian Armour-Chalou is no longer with us and is becoming ‘collectible’ …google is your friend to see if his style is your cup of Earl Grey So I’d suggest a tour of the exhibitions at festival time - everything from the absurdly pretentious to twee landscapes should be on view. The tourists traps at Snape maltings usually have some stuff by local artists - so again google is your friend if you see anything you like. A number of regional auction houses have regular art sales - but their commissions are well beyond the ridiculous now - but again is a good place for your eye to wander on line to see if anything appeals… and its quite good fun to go and view, even if the pictures are invariably somewhat disappointing.

Suffolk Artist on 11:42 - Jan 18 with 3813 views | bugblatter | I have to add my pennyworth (and blatant plug for my own work)! If you’re ever in the Ipswich area you are free to visit our gallery in Holbrook, full of local artists! https://www.gallery.comehitherdesign.com/ …where you can purchase my own ITFC themed work (including the TWTD commissioned Sergeant Pepper poster), available online here: https://www.comehitherdesign.com/shop/ In terms of Suffolk artists (being biased) I‘d recommend my father! He’s a printmaker (etcher) of over 50 years, with much of his work focused on Suffolk. Available from our gallery, or online direct from him. Here is his latest work of Suffolk based subjects … https://www.glynnthomas.com/product-category/england/suffolk/ His work are original, hand printed works — not digital reproductions. You'll be owning an original, limited edition piece of art, not a mass-produced poster or print. [Post edited 18 Jan 2024 11:44]

Suffolk Artist on 11:56 - Jan 18 with 3761 views | DJR | My father and I got to know Ted Gentry through rugby, and my parents had a large painting of his of Pin Mill in their living room, which I now have tucked away in the attic but have hung on to because of the Suffolk connection. https://suffolkartists.co.uk/index.cgi?choice=painter&pid=1779 It looks like his work sometimes comes up at auction, and is not especially expensive. Suffolk Artist on 17:41 - Jan 18 with 3295 views | Chondzoresk | I collect Suffolk artists. My soft spot is for 19th century Ipswich/Suffolk artists. Thomas Smythe, his brother Edward Robert Smythe. John Moore, his studio sharer Christopher Mark Maskell, (who both signed each others works as a “joke”), Robert Burrows, Thomas Churchyard. A Thomas Smythe snow scene will set you back a minimum of £10,000. John Moore of Shipping off Felixstowe would be around £5,000 Maskells works are from £100-£1000. Doris Zinkeisen is a great Framingham artist. Here’s a link to all noted Suffolk artists. https://suffolkartists.co.uk/index.cgi Go with your heart, what fits into your life. Good luck, be it £50 or £5k.
