I moved house a few months ago and am reliable informed that we need something to hang on a large wall we have.
I like the idea of having something from a Suffolk artist (to offset my Yorkshire stone house, in Yorkshire...) but literally have no idea where to start looking. Does anyone have any recommendations?
I know nothing about art or photgraphy so no idea what style etc. we'd be looking for - think I fall into the "I'll know it when I see it" bucket, which isn't helpful... |  | | |  |

Maggi Hambling is an obvious Suffolk artist.

See if you can pick up something by John Constable, Thomas Gainsborough or Alfred Munnings. You might find one cheap at a charity shop. |  |

John Cooke from Dent but originally started painting in Bungay where he taught me in the 60s. Died a few years ago but I believe his painting are available . I have two great scenes of lanes around Dent Dale.
Alternately check out Southwold Gallery on line for a wide range.

A couple of friends of mine got married about 10 years ago and for their wedding present asked people to contribute to the cost of them commissioning an artist they know to paint a picture of the Orwell from the Shotley Peninsula. The artist at the time only did it as a hobby but is now a full-time artist. I could ask them for the artist's name if you like. |  | | |

A number of local artists used to have exhibitions during the Aldeburgh festival - i suspect they still do. A bloke called Ian Armour-Chalou is no longer with us and is becoming ‘collectible’ …google is your friend to see if his style is your cup of Earl Grey
So I’d suggest a tour of the exhibitions at festival time - everything from the absurdly pretentious to twee landscapes should be on view.
The tourists traps at Snape maltings usually have some stuff by local artists - so again google is your friend if you see anything you like.
A number of regional auction houses have regular art sales - but their commissions are well beyond the ridiculous now - but again is a good place for your eye to wander on line to see if anything appeals… and its quite good fun to go and view, even if the pictures are invariably somewhat disappointing. | |

My father and I got to know Ted Gentry through rugby, and my parents had a large painting of his of Pin Mill in their living room, which I now have tucked away in the attic but have hung on to because of the Suffolk connection.

OP has a large wall to fill in Yorkshire, couldn't do better than Suffolk's most famous artist

I collect Suffolk artists. My soft spot is for 19th century Ipswich/Suffolk artists. Thomas Smythe, his brother Edward Robert Smythe. John Moore, his studio sharer Christopher Mark Maskell, (who both signed each others works as a “joke”), Robert Burrows, Thomas Churchyard.
A Thomas Smythe snow scene will set you back a minimum of £10,000.
John Moore of Shipping off Felixstowe would be around £5,000
Maskells works are from £100-£1000.
Doris Zinkeisen is a great Framingham artist.
