‘Fake photo’ drama from the Royals… on 09:10 - Mar 11 by baxterbasics | Weird story this. Official Royal photographs are often altered or touched up in some way. What is it that spooked the media so much about this one? |
What's odd for me, is that the tree behind them has leaves on it. There aren't many leaves around at this time of year. What's also odd is that I've got sucked into a story that I give zero sh1ts about. Lament. [Post edited 11 Mar 2024 11:00]

‘Fake photo’ drama from the Royals… on 09:09 - Mar 11 by Steve_M | Aside from anything else, it's a failure of news management. This thread I came across this morning, is interesting: I guess the Royals will have to spin some more anti-Meghan stories to take the heat off this now. |
However, the exact nature of an "abdominal procedure" might be something she or the family don't want plastered all over the front pages. It's a bit different in terms of potential embarrassment to choking on a fish bone, which is merely an accident. The press were somewhat less savage towards the Royal Family in 1982.

Yes, that is true but large parts of the press are highly sympathetic to certain members of the Royal Family. It's still a major failure of news management - although if it helps to undermine that farcical anachronism further then so be it.

Broadly speaking, I agree. I couldn't give a fig about Kate's health issues, marital status, or any of the other matters being speculated about. The thing for me is that Kensington Palace has chosen to divert from the usual tried-and-tested line of 'it's a private matter, no further details will be given or discussed', and has chosen to present a clearly-doctored photo aimed at proving that all is okay. They've then doubled-down on the deception with an explanation on a par with Prince Nonce's famed 'it couldn't have been me because I cannot sweat' line. It's Stalinesque in its deception, especially when the client media lap it all up without question or critique. [Post edited 11 Mar 2024 12:34]

Would possibly have been more accurate to say it was a photo taken last spring around the time Kate's ring was being resized by the royal jeweller.

Nah... She probably just took them of whilst Brillo-ing the pots and forgot to put them on afterwards. Rings'll be on the window sill by the sink.

Obviously, but that explanation gives little opportunity for another smutty reference to Kate's ring.

Wishing to avoid fat fingers is probably why William made the phone call to his "family friend" in the first place.

9 carat gold is pretty hard wearing. She shouldn't need to take it off.

To explain why this was a problem, and why PA, Getty, AFP and Reuters issued a 'kill order' which sounds like something totally different. Catherine is right, many amateur photographers, do indeed experiment with editing, and like many amateur photographers she's used the wrong terminology, (its post production, but thats another story). However, the bit that Catherine continues to forget is that many amateur photographers aren't issuing their images to news agencies as official press releases are they? Newspapers and professional photographers are bound by the IPSO editors code, which expressly forbids 'anything but standard manipulation to lighting and cropping', which Catherine's manipulation falls outside of. What has made the agencies react so strongly in this instance, is that HRH The Prince of Wales has been repeatedly vociferous in attempting to prosecute any photographer who he deems have broken the IPSO code, appointing solicitors Harbottle and Lewis to do so in multiple cases over the last year. It would be highly Ironic for the agencies to allow publication of an image manipulated by Catherine herself in those circumstances, I suspect there was a lot of laughing in various agencies when it was noticed.

That’s made me chuckle, and makes a lot of sense. In my 25 odd years involved in news / image distribution and syndication - I’ve witnessed about 3 kill notices during that time. Kill notices only amplify the story, as it highlights the error or mistake - which is why they are so rarely used. It really is two fingers up to them

Is the real story here, the integrity filled British press being difficult and unpleasant in response to the Royals being strict about privacy and doctoring on photos they publish?

As an aside, and to try to take my mind off thinking about the above, I wonder whether AI usage in image manipulation is more difficult to detect in Norfolk, or whether perhaps the training for the engines was done in Norfolk or using photos of people from Norfolk. Digitally diverse Norfolk. Was this picture taken at Sandringham perhaps? Where does the Royal Jeweller work when he's resizing rings? Isn't he related to the Royal Beekeeper responsible for the Royal Jelly? I think we need to know. (No, I'm still thinking about it.)

That's a bit lazy of you to be honest. It's about editorial integrity, nothing more, nothing less. If a newspaper is prepared to publish an image that has been altered, how can any image in that publication be trusted as the truth ever again. I'm not talking about dog w4nk images of celebrities here, I couldn't give two sh1ts about them. I'm talking about the images you NEED to be trusted, like images of atrocities, or images need to be shown to raise awareness of an issue in the UK or abroad, it's those images that will suffer if we don't 'kill' manipulated images like this, no matter the celebrity status of the photographer.
