England new kit has enraged Joey Barton and the gammons… 17:56 - Mar 21 with 14728 views | ITFC_Forever | But has anyone said why the flag has been changed? Or are they creating something to moan about (ie; that it’s woke nonsense)? Personally don’t see why they’ve done it, and I won’t be buying it - not as some kind of anti-woke protest, but because at £125 or £85, it’s a massive rip-off.

England new kit has enraged Joey Barton and the gammons… on 10:30 - Mar 22 by jayessess | IMO If we're talking national symbolism most of the change has gone the other way over the past 40-50 years ago, towards more hyper-sensitivity around people's sense of national pride, not less. Take Remembrance Sunday, for instance. Go back to the 1990s and there's no "official remembrance fixture" for the football, no poppies sewn into shirts, no expectation that everyone wear a poppy on every live TV programme or every public event, no questions directed towards those not wearing them or wearing white ones. It was a question of people quietly remembering in the manner they deemed appropriate and a discrete event on the Sunday. That's all a post-2000 invention and the sensitivities around it have dialled up not down. You could do similar for other bits of national symbolism (the England flag itself! Had next to zero presence at England games until Euro '96). I see people display national flags in their gardens now, which for much of the 20th Century would have been considered a bit of a gauche Americanisation (whose benefit are you displaying it for? Everyone who sees it already knows they're in England and most of them are English). That's before we get into people's willingness to take offence on behalf of the monarchy (who are more than capable of looking after themselves). Personally, I think countries that are at ease with themselves shouldn't need to spend quite so much time fretting over whether anyone is disrespecting their national symbols or sense of national identity. It is a sign of strength, comfort and security to just shrug it off. [Post edited 22 Mar 2024 10:31]

Exactly this. The fearmongering attached to anything that is seen as even slightly anti-patriotic has caused a massive retaliation and over reaction and as a result the flag, poppy etc are more visible now than I can ever remember And that's not before we mention how social media has become a cesspit of posts that start with "if my flag/poppy offends you..." There are plenty of examples of GB/England flags that have been 'played' with in sport over the years. But the furore has never been as big as it is now!

However can you imagine them messing about with the US,,Scottish of welsh flag for example and can you see their FA etc signing it off? |
Yes, I can imagine the kit manufacturer for Scotland or Wales at least doing that. And I can imagine the respective FAs signing it off. I bet what prevents it happening is that both are relatively small countries football-wise compared to England and they have to make do with templates from the Adidas range. What is it with this whole "you wouldn't get country X being expected to accept that" like we're some uniquely victimised country?

Yeah, I know what you mean.... on 08:16 - Mar 22 by bazza | You notice the ones who it has upset could fill all the stadiums for any sports across the country.. and the ones who “like it”, wouldn’t win you any line. |
Imagine how angry some of them would be if they knew that: We wore a yellow away shirt in the 70’s and no one cried. England fans haven’t always hung a bed sheet with a red cross on it out of their bedroom window during tournaments. England fans haven’t always kicked off because something wasn’t the right colour on their replica shirt they wore to throw beer over each other in some fan park in the hope of two seconds of fame at the end of news at ten.

Southgate should worry less about what's on the shirt and a little more about those he selects to wear it.

Obviously there are lots of things that you have opinions on, that I don’t care about! I do though, have an opinion that our country’s flag should not be ‘playfully’ messed about with for no good reason! What does that make me then? Let me guess, a raging right wing fascist?

Depends why you're wearing it, doesn't it? Many xenophobes use both the poppy and the England flag as a symbol of nationalism because they believe Britain is being invaded. [Post edited 23 Mar 2024 14:03]
