Best Ipswich Town Captains 20:31 - May 15 with 4154 viewsChurchman

I thought I’d start a summertime thread, not least as a crude, shallow effort to distract from the ‘other’ thread that’s running.

Who are the best ITFC Captains you have seen. This can be by their captaincy, ability, anything you like. I’ll go:

1. Mick Mills
2. Sam Morsy
3. Matt Holland
4. David Linighan
5. Jason De Vos

I did see Billy Baxter play, but I don’t really remember him tbh, so he has to stay with the McLuckie’s, Nelson’s and Parker’s of our glorious past.

It’s just a starter. A bit of fun. A list for debate. Nothing more.

Er yes, I did manage the odd game when Magilton turned out. Perhaps a 120 of his 281 appearances live + tv games?

I always associate that team with Holland as Captain so left him out. Captains on the pitch are not the same as those with the armband as far as my opening post is concerned and yes, in the good ole days I know armbands weren’t worn.

I’m not sure TM was ever Captain, FB. Did the job of one at the back though so I can see where you are coming from. Top player.

I'd have Holland ahead of Morsy based on what has been achieved to date. Holland achieved in the top flight, and played more than twice as many games as Sam has for us so far. So it doesn't even go down to a yellow card tie break for me.

But of course, Sam has the chance to overtake him and even snap at MM's ankles one day, who knows?

Mick Mills will always be my captain but Morsy is right up there with him.

I'll claim that. But no I actually thought he was skipper at one point.

What an amazing on pitch leader tho anyway.

Mick Mills will always be number one.

The rest can be put as pretty good second places but I must give a shout out for Geraint Williams.

He certainly played and acted like one, incl telling his defenders what he wanted from them.

Back to Jim Magilton he had that never say die attitude the current team have. Not the worst manager we’ve ever had either.

I see he was club captain 2003/5 under Royle before he retired.

Nice one. Didn’t remember that. The record says Romeo captained the club during Duncan’s time. He was a lovely player, Zondervan

Andy Nelsen.

Andy Nesbitt Nelson played 214 matches for us over five years. His pictures suggest that crossing him meant you were in for a tough day.

Started at West Ham (15 apps), went on from us to Orient in 1964 (43 apps) then Plymouth in 65 for a further 94 matches.

I’d be interested in the view of anyone who saw him play. His name doesn’t crop up much.

Before his fall out with Bobby, Bill Baxter was skip for the 68' promotion side? Under McGarry he'd have had to have had something about him.

That’s wrong. TM was never Captain. It was always Matt Holland.

Mowbray may have stood in if Holland was out for any reason. However MH made about a million consecutive appearances so that would have been rare. Matt always shook hands with the oppo captain, wore the armband and at Wembley lifted the trophy. He doesn’t appear in the Pride of Anglia list either.

It really was a team of Captains though with Tony at the back, Jim in midfield and some pretty strong characters up front too.

Yes, that equalising goal will always be a standout moment. It rocketed in to the top of the net. Queue the tunnel half of Wembley going nuts.

Holland was captain by then. Took over from mogga the summer of 99 when mogga retired. And then came out of retirement because manu thetis wasn't as reliable a replacement as we'd hoped.

Holland in my lifetime but morsy's pushing him very close. Honourable mention to chambo for long-service and being a top bloke. Shame the teams he played in were so dreadful.
