Good grief.

National service, in 2024? What a disgusting idea (save in war circumstances).

Designed to pander to the worst elements of the right wing who might be leakinf across to Reform.

That's all it is. I half expect them to propose sinking small boats crossing the Channel some time between now and the election. Or declaring war on someone.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Haha. That's the outcome of his day of planning!
Vote for us and we'll send your kids to war. He's desperate not to be PM in July.

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

His plan seems to be, pay someone to come up with a plan.

So would universities stop taking in 18 year olds or would a university student be exempt?

Historically, it was a split between those who did their NS first and those whe deferred until after. Tho, of course, very much fewer went to university at that time.

It's insane. But.........

He has already lost the election
He has already lost the under 30 vote
This will appeal to Reform/Ukip voters
This will appeal to whatever base they still have so may get their bums off their seats on polling day

Put it to the general public in this form and they may see it as quite reasonable.

It's not even a populist policy - only 34% people support it according to YouGov

https://yougov.co.uk/politics/articles/46034-do-britons-want-bring-back-national

It would actually be more popular to bring back death penalty for multiple murder which has 55% support

https://yougov.co.uk/politics/articles/41640-britons-dont-tend-support-death-pen

Maybe that policy will be unveiled tomorrow?

Of course he ruled it out 5 months ago too.

And Yes Minister already has him covered

I'm old so I will only change my vote to the Tories if they offer Horlicks on prescription.
Over 60's don't pay for prescriptions.

Yeah probably. I wouldn’t be surprised if Tom Hunt defects to Reform. He seems a perfect match for them.

It's not about populism particularly, rather appealing to relatively small groups of hard-liners who are abandoning the Conservatives for Reform. This neglects the fact that in three of the four by-elections in 2024, the combined Con-Reform vote still fell short of the winner. In the case of the exception, Kingswood, it only exceeded it by 77.

But, again, this is all about the aftermath - setting out stalls for who gets to lead the party next.

It's laughable on several fronts. Not least because reintroducing national service would involve actually having to finance public services. Which he's spent his entire political career not doing.

If it wasn’t such a dated reference Kier would have have been asking whether he was being punked when he heard that.

I find myself agreeing with op, Rishi doesn’t want to win. Whether he has finally twigged how deeply unpopular he is or has just longed the pound on margin it’s hard to say but he seems determined to destroy his party one way or another.

This government don’t want all kids to go to university anyway, it gives the working classes ideas above their station.

If it tasted foul then it would serve me right for selling out and knowing I'd sentenced the country to more years of hate and neglect.
