The Last Time We Were Promoted to PL... 10:27 - Jun 2 with 2936 viewsTangledupin_Blue

...(from memory)...our first game was away against Tottenham. Mark Venus scored the first goal of all the clubs in that PL season to give us an early lead so, about ten minutes into the season, we were totl in the live table. But Spurs went on to win the game 3-1.

Our only debutant that day was Hermann Hreidarsson. The rest of the team were players who'd won us the promotion.

Our first home game was the draw against reigning champions Manchester United.

Am I remembering right?

Indeed, we didn’t start all that well winning 1 in 5 and losing 3. Then we went on a great run from Sept to Christmas

Yes, we played really well against United too, I think it was a Beckham free kick which equalised?

After the game he said the stadium sounded like 40k, it was about 21k at the time?

I can remember a defeat at Leicester and some goings on with Robbie Savage.

It was a surprising win at Leeds that kicked things off really.

I remember the Man U game well. The Beckham goal was more a cross I think into the area for someone to get on the end of, but everyone misjudged it, including Richard Wright and it went in at the far post. After the game I remember Fergie saying we'd do well if we played like that every game. He wasn't wrong!

I think the Savage incidents were the next season, we were leading and Savage dived in the penalty area and got Serenii sent off. The card was reversed on appeal. The other year he actually criticised anyone doing the same!

I remember us winning 3-0 at Goodison early in the season and thinking that we could do a lot better than merely survive. About that time we also beat Arsenal and a few weeks later won at Anfield.

We outplayed Everton, Marcus Stewart got a couple of memory serves.

Didn’t think we beat Arsenal. Wasn’t that 1-1 at PR?

I remember the start of that season, games were being shown on Scandanavian satellite channels and being shown in certain pubs before they cracked down on it. Spurs v Ipswich was one of those.

That was followed by Titus Bramble's maestro against Sunderland.

His run and that goal and North Stand erupting. Never got bored watching it.

I remember it really well.. the line-up in detail. Tarrico! on 11:38 - Jun 2 with 2501 viewsunstableblue

Sat in the upper tier of the away end behind the goal at White Hart Lane.

The abiding memory was the Venus goal, but also that we had really held our own, and looked very comfortable on the ball indeed.

So didn't feel deflated walking away from the ground. A fair score was probably 2-1 to them. They had the like of Rebrov, Anderton, Sherwood, Ferdinand, and Sol Campbell. It was a step up. A certain Mauricio Tarrico came on for them in the 89th minute.

The Town line-up was a as follows:

Wright
Croft Herman Bramble Venus Clapham
Holland Magilton
Johnson Scowcroft Stewart

Agree no much change from the Wembley team, apart from Herman. But not sure Bramble and Croft had played much.

The Town side was still top Championship at that time though, and that midfield and attack was relatively strong. Holland and Magilton.. benchmarks higher that Morsy and Luongo in my mind. And as I said in an earlier post - this area needs strengthening.

You are right it was Man U next in August, and then the moral boosting 1-0 win against Sunderland with that Bramble goal! September and October weren't great.. but still some important draws/wins. We were continuing to show what we could do.

I can vaguely recall us winning 2-1 at Highbury. From what you say that was League Cup rather than League. Thanks for clearing it up 😊

Ferguson on the game stated:

“You won’t see such an exciting game all season,” said United boss Alex Ferguson.

“They fought like tigers and deserved their point. I’m quite happy with the result.”

He remarked "what a great place Portman Road is to play football". As stated he waxed lyrical about the Portman Road noise, which was remarkable, it was the emotion of all those play-offs, that Wembley final, and the arrival of those galacticos.. it all just came together. I hope our fan base can do even better this time around with 27k of us.

The Man U line-up was:

Fabien Barthez
Gary Neville - Jaap Staam - Phil Neville
David Beckham - Wallwork - Roy Keane -Paul Scholes - Ryan Giggs
Dwight Yorke - Ole Gunar Solsjaer

Wowsers!

Yes the results picked up after Leeds but I always had the impression that the (unlucky) draw with Man U "told" the players they could be competetive.

Whatever, 'twas a fabulous season.

My abiding memory of the season came towards the end.. watching us beat Southampton on sky with that Marcus Stewart hat trick... my youngest had only just been allowed home after being kept in hospital after his birth with a quite serious problem and he slept on my chest all through the game as Town basically took them apart....going back to the Man U game Fabs goal caused a surge of electricity through my body like I'd never experienced before or since!.... it was like being plugged into the mains for a few seconds.

Also key was the weekend before against Villa I think Burley accepted defeat in trying to play Johnson and Stewart together. Johnson started but Marcus came off the bench to score a late goal in 2-1 defeat and he was a regular for the remainder of the season.

Yes. I went to the Spurs game. Third game was the home win against Sunderland that set us up for the season really, especially after the Man U draw. And Man U then were more like the Man City of today.
