I was surprised by that, I thought he played with confidence when he came on Monday, however at one point he could have put Grealish through but decided against it, either he didn't see it or didn't want to aid a rival's chances of making the squad. As he's been dropped perhaps Southgate also thought the latter.
He is behind Bellingham, Foden and Palmer in his best position so maybe with his ego he wouldn't be a good backup player. |  |

Right call. He's well down the pecking order when you consider the quality of those he's up against - Bellingham, Foden, Grealish, Palmer, Saka. There's the 'big 5' right there, before you even consider Eze into the conversation who is a better bench option than Maddison IMO. TAA with his versatility too. Maddison seems like an absolute whopper as well.
Would think Bowen, Jones, Quansah, Trafford will all drop out too. Still leaves a couple more doesn't it? |  | | |

As others have said, he's a decent player but he's well down the pecking order for those forward positions.

That's a fair point but in the event both Saka & Palmer were off it then Foden presumably would move over to the right anyway. I think Eze can play on either side too. We would be left with:
Left: Foden, Grealish, Gordon, Eze
Right: Saka, Palmer, Foden, potentially Eze
Bellingham in the middle, #10 behind Kane. We also have the option to play Foden in there or Palmer.
Spoilt for attacking quality really. Issue I have is under Southgate we're too conservative. We're not blessed with the best options defensively but don't seem to play to our offensive strengths enough. We need more McKenna at PR ball. [Post edited 6 Jun 2024 12:29]
