its not as simple as that, and takes time to access and then analyse the records.

This Michael Mosley thing doesn't sound promising does it? on 11:59 - Jun 9 by The_Flashing_Smile | Tracing a phone signal? I'm out of my depth technology-wise, but isn't that a thing? You can trace a phone's location without ringing it? |
Yeah. On apple it's "find my iPhone". One of my daughter's had a blowout whilst driving home at 4am one morning. Before she could tell me her exact location her battery died. FMIP gave me her last location so I was able to get the AA out to her and meet her. It's a handy app if I leave my iPad at work or in a bar. I can even find my car keys with it as I have an apple fob. I really wouldn't want to be without the ability to be found if I was going hiking or climbing somewhere. Especially on my own. Hopeful this thread will be of help to others who enjoy outdoor pursuits and didn't know about tracking via a phone or watch.

Provided you can get a signal...

This Michael Mosley thing doesn't sound promising does it? on 11:35 - Jun 9 by cressi | The sensible thing is not to wonder off alone at the hottest time of the day. I take a phone but switch off data roaming to avoid the charges but guess its still detectable. Intelligent man but man a poor decision. |
When roaming in very hot weather taking plenty of water with you is the most important thing, that will save your life rather than a phone. The other problem on those smaller Greek islands is that the phone signal doesn't exist away from the 'built' up areas and without a signal the authorities wouldn't be able to triangulate the position for ordinary GPRS phones. If he had a satellite phone then they possibly could.

He was found near a busy beach. Water on a hot day is obviously important, but that and a phone would be a good idea. If you fall and break your leg, and/or are in an inaccessible place, then your water will eventually run out.

As a comparison 93% of the landmass of the UK has 4g coverage. And yet i absolutely can guarantee there is more than 7% of the UK where you will not get any 4g service depending what network you are on. For instance I'm on Tesco mobile, which is an O2 reseller, I get no mobile data coverage in London, one of the most densely populated areas of the UK with the most mobile cell sites per square metre than anywhere in the UK. No 4g service in London. Work that one out. Or take Portman Road how many of you have 4g service inside the ground ? I know some do as they can stream video during a game, but I get no network during a game. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

The lack of service in the ground I presumed was due to the amount of people. No idea why you can't get signal in London, that's very odd and I'd be contacting my supplier or looking at what's wrong with my phone!

I think the convo about mobile coverage is a distraction imho. Don't need 4g coverage to have an emergency signal. Have no idea what happened and speculation is probably not helpful. He was found under a fence near the bar near the marina. An umbrella was found nearby, God love him maybe a fall? Or did I read there are a lot of snakes around there? Another brilliant app is What3Words. It gives a three word code to tiny sections of the world that are totally unique. This app could also save lives, and emergency services and breakdown companies have access to the app to try to identify a certain location when a person is lost or disoriented. Download the app! This tragedy that has befallen a seemingly decent and highly-regarded individual, I hope, will raise awareness for technology that can save lives. I can't imagine how awful this must be for the Mosely family. 😢 [Post edited 9 Jun 2024 23:09]

In this situation the normal response is to systematically go through each room getting more and more frustrated with myself, making countless promises that I will be better and the phone will have a "place" where it will be stored when not in use. The phone then turns up normally in the original room that I started off in

Have you watched any of the footage from the area he was found ? See https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c0kk9gvw8l0o for a short video clip of the view: 'CCTV footage showed he had walked to the other side of the bay in intense heat and across rocky terrain..."He did an incredible climb, took the wrong route and collapsed where he couldn’t be easily seen by the extensive search team."'

I have. "This is a busy beach" says the reporter, very close to where he was found. The reason he lay where he couldn't be seen was because he was behind a fence, which was right by a bar. He took a wrong turn... another reason his phone would've helped, with sat nav, google maps, even a compass for an adventurer like him might have helped. So sad.

I’m not sure why you are getting pushback against this. He was just a 90 second walk away from safety. we will never know for sure, but had he a GPDS device on his person there may have been a happier outcome to this story. As you say, very sad.

I went on holiday to Symi and stayed in the village of Pedi, which is what passed for the second largest conurbation on the island. Obviously things will have changed since then but it was a couple of hundred houses, tops. Probably less. We went in August and it was really hot. The beach that he set off from, Pedi and where he was found are in the top half of this image - https://ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/976/cpsprodpb/9679/live/6bb90be0-26ff-11ef-a13a-0b We stayed in a waterfront apartment close to where he was seen at 14:00 The walk to Pedi from Agios Nikolaos beach is along rocky terrain and very up and down. When we were there if you wanted to spend some time on Agios Niklaos beach it was easiest to get a boat from Pedi to the beach and do the same for the return. From Pedi to where he was found is more of the same. If I'd done that walk, at the time of day he did it, I would definitely have needed a sit down in Pedi before tackling the second leg towards Agia Marina. And, given that most of the traffic to that nearby 'busy' beach (which is relative, it's not Brighton on a bank holiday Monday) is incoming/outgoing boat traffic (there's no road as far as I can see), not hugely surprising that someone could lay undetected for a couple of days. Thanks, I've been to Symi a long while back too (and from Rhodes like most do) so understand what you are saying. The point I have been labouring, without paying tribute to Mosley's considerable skills as a communicator on health matters which I perhaps should have done, is that even a couple of hours walk on difficult terrain in weather that can push the human body to its limits, needs forethought and that gadgets (which even the Smartphone with all its capabilities is) are not magic wands which can get you out of any situation. Be aware that you need to build up a skillset and keep a level of fitness up, and read the weather and the land both before you set off and as you go along. So farewell Michael Mosley and thank you for all you have done, I think the former Labour deputy leader Tom Watson has put it best 'He certainly changed my life. He gave me the idea that I wasn't broken," Mr Watson, who said in 2018 that he had "reversed" his type 2 diabetes through diet and exercise, told the BBC Radio 4's Today programme.' And great thanks to the efforts of the search and rescue teams, limited as their success was in this instance, who can put themselves in danger and who give up their time to develop their skills and use them in these exercises. We owe it to them to live and learn from the unfortunate experiences like this one before we set off again into the wonderful great outdoors.

You're right in all you say and once you throw in the 'holiday mindset' it's easy to get caught out. Most incidents like this thankfully don't have such a tragic outcome. A smartphone, while no panacea, could have been useful but there's no guarantee. The pictures show that he was carrying an umbrella for shade. Some water too would be a good idea in the circumstances.

I haven't entered into the debate re carrying smartphones or doing adventurous walks, but would just say that although I do take the utmost care when walking my dog on my own in the (not much used) woods with their hundreds of knobbly roots & mini stumps sticking out even on the main, sloping, path near home, as I have health issues & am older than Michael Mosley - there are occasions when - 1. You realise after half a mile along the road (but not yet reached the woods),that you've forgotten your phone, but feel you've gone too far to turn back, because 99.9% of the time you won't need it. 2. You deliberately take the slightly riskier route because you've always been an adventurous person & actually need the challenge and/or a bit of adventure in your life in order to stay as mentally and emotionally healthy as possible. We've all got to go sometime,& adapting a phrase, I'd prefer "dying on my feet in the woods than living on my knees on my garden's smooth lawn". Maybe Dr. Mosley had a similar philosophy.
