Half-decent banks? 16:57 - Jun 14 with 6029 viewsZx1988

Can anyone recommend a half-decent bank for general-purpose banking, that has decided to embrace rather than reject modern tech?

I'm with NatWest at the moment, and discovered that I can't deposit any cheque for a half-decent amount without having to take a trip into the local branch (App-based pay-in has both a per-cheque and per-day limit, and using the Post Office requires a paying-in book(!)).

I'm not too bothered about any other bells and whistles that might come with a current account, I just want to be able to undertake fairly standard transactions without having to travel miles to the nearest open branch, or having to try and find the paying-in book I last used about 20 years ago!

You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright.

Lloyds is the same group as Halifax.

Probably why Halifax and Lloyds were both down at the same time the other week. Their IT will be the same.

Oh yeah of course. I think you're right. Won't be lloyds then.

Another vote for Firstdirect. Have banked with them since they were first set up, early 1990s, and they are excellent.

I use them for day to day banking, rather than mortgage and savings.

Aren't they just HSBC basically?

I questioned if they could be regarded as a half decent bank, you responded that you had no problems with them, I offered a link in support of original comment.

I have banked with Barclays for over 60 years, they have never let me down but they do have a history of supporting the wrong people at the wrong time. For example they supported South Africa back in the day.

Sorry - thought you meant half-decent as in competent rather than decent as in morals.

Apologies.

It was only just starting to hit news outlets, I had heard about it earlier in the day.

I've used First direct for years, but also have Chase for their cashback and good rates.

A vote for First Direct here, been with them for years & years & never had any reason at all to think differently. Best customer service anywhere. Do it!

I've been with RBS for many years and have 5 accounts with them including a dormant business account. They recently the changed my online password without any warning or notice and locked me out of all of my accounts containing up to £50k. After prolonged complaints I was eventually told that they can do that without any explanation, but they eventually allowed me access again after they told me I would have to wait up to 10 working days for a new activation code. Bit of a problem to pay bills, etc. Hence I would never recommend RBS and their complaints procedure is appalling.

Pretty sure I was able to pay in a cheque at a Post Office using my Debit Card as the account reference instead of a paying in slip.

It was a four-figure tax rebate; I tend to get it every year once I've reclaimed expenses etc., so it becomes a bit of a faff if I have to head into the city (and all that entails) just to try and bank it.

IIRC if I don't take the cheque option, HMRC will apply the rebate to this years' tax code, meaning I don't get the nice lump sum (which I prefer), so it seems as if I'm stuck trying to bank a hefty cheque every year.

HMRC pay by bacs transfer. They stopped dishing out cheques years back

I'm with Halifax but I wouldn't recommend them. They blocked my fooking ticketmaster transaction when I was trying to buy tickets to see David Gilmour in October. I'll be changing to Lloyds soon.

I have both Lloyds and Halifax. Halifax is the slightly better offering but it's the same group so don't expect any material differences. I think the cheque deposit limit is £5k by app.

I use Starling when abroad of the Halifax clarity blue card. The latter is preferable as Starling is effectively a debit card not a credit card so cash needs to be there, ready and waiting.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

I think you’d go a long way to find anything better than Nationwide building society. I’ve just been given £100 into my account for being a loyal customer - again!

You realise all banks, or organisations will suffer the odd failure of IT systems don’t you? It wasn’t personal against you.

With knowing what I now know about fraud, and fraud prevention, and the measures in place to protect you, I’d only ever opt to bank with Lloyd’s.

In the process of moving from HSBC to Lloyd’s now.
