The amazing Ronaldo 22:47 - Jul 1 with 7759 viewsMattinLondon

The leadership, the bravery to step up and take his penalty after missing his earlier one. Compared to past performances , this one wasn’t great at all, but he still delivered.

Arguably one of the greatest ever players - in an age where almost every single match of his senior career has been televised, his performances have been consistently world class. Compared to previous decades where players could have off-days and not have glare of a worldwide audience watching them.

One of the greatest ever players - well done Ronaldo.

Indeed. You make an excellent point in that it would be really interesting to compare Anderson and Ronaldo in terms of longevity in the profession they excel at the highest level. Do they share the same lifestyle traits and training regimes or differ markedly. It would be interesting to know.

It’s remarkable because they seem so far outside the norm in terms of longevity.

Ronaldo having his own team is really interesting, yet he gets knocked for it as again being a narcissist/ pre Madonna etc. but something is working for him. He can still leap for the ball higher than anyone on a football pitch aged 39. Remarkable. As as athlete at their level he and Anderson appear to be complete outliers.

Despite his longevity, Ronaldo is a prima donna that is post Madonna.

She released ‘Like A Virgin’ before he was even born.

That could be very true, it may not but that’s the thing we don’t know. That’s why I’m most surprised on this thread at Ronaldo being called a prick by someone who has had their own personal battles.

Ronaldo hasn’t done a lot wrong other than be a bit narcissistic. Fair enough if people don’t like him for that but it’s not like he’s a John Terry and shagged a pals wife. If you don’t like him fair enough, but why does he get abuse from so many out there’s, guess it’s jealousy.

Plenty I don’t like about Ronaldo and his tears tonight were a bit embarrassing but his charity work, devotion to family, his professionalism and the way he strives to keep him self fit let alone his football ability deserve respect I think.

Excuse me? Back off. Linking this to MH is tenuous at best. I think he’s a prick because of his tax dodging, women suspecting, tantrum throwing episodes. Leave my personal things out of this.

he's struggling with his mental health now, do people not get what they just saw happen on television ?

maybe we need to watch that Norwich video about mental health again to remember.

It's alright, his team literally slapped him upside the head and told him to sort himself out... and he did. And still a gazillionaire international sports hero. Blub.

He does a huge amount of charity work - the total prick.

But I was just commenting on his footballing ability and career. Not sure making personal comments like that adds to the discussion.

So did Jimmy Saville tbf

I agree to a point. He isn't as potent as he was (understandable) and I felt the team as a whole might be more effective without him. Everything centres around hitting him with passes and crosses; when he's off it the team suffers.

It's impressive that he took it upon himself to take the first penalty, but he also cried after he missed the penalty in the first half of extra time and went AWOL for the second half of extra time. Better late than never, but it would have shown more leadership to bust a gut to get a goal in extra time.

I don't think you can really criticize anyone who worked in Spain for being tax dodgers. How much do you know about the Spanish tax system? Wouldn't you tell your accountant to legally reduce your taxes as much as possible? If he were an outlier, you might have a point, but so many footballers and Shakira have fallen foul of the Spanish tax authorities, it does seem to be a case of a misunderstanding of the rules rather than fraud. Anyway, taxes are so complicated that you need to trust your accountant to deal with all that stuff, especially in a foreign country.

I have no idea what happened. These payoffs are for two reasons. To cover for potentially illegal behaviour and/or to protect reputations. It is not an accident that these payoffs are made to victims as well as clout chasers. It muddies the water so much that looking from the outside it's difficult to know what happened.

It might’ve just been a typo, but if so, he’s also post-Maradonna too.

You suggesting my C grade at French O'level isn't up to the standard for polite chat with foreign diplomats?

Not even in the top 10 for me.

Great player but has an ego which brings a certain drama to everything (given him the drive to stay in shape in latter years you could argue) - but not what I watch football for.

Wait, this is a genuine post?

The guy's won 5 Ballons D'Or, 33 trophies, and scored more than a goal a game during almost a whole decade at Real Madrid. Everyone has the right to disagree that such a player is one of the greatest, but it would be far more interesting to hear your reasoning?

Playing in the easy mode Spanish league for that long would have even made Aaron Drinan look world class!

Yes and presumably the Champions League is also easy mode? He has 140 goals there, and only one other player has ever scored more than 100 (Messi of course).

Also, the top six Champions League scorers of all time have all played in the Spanish league, so I'm not certain it disqualifies one from being a great. But just in case one is obliged to ignore his goal record in the Spanish league (incidentally he's 2nd of all time in that league, and no other scorer in the top 80 has averaged more than a goal a game), he can presumably rely on 3 premier league titles and 2 in Serie A. Although I imagine there's something wrong both both of those leagues too...

There’s always some weird reason why some cannot afford Ronaldo the respect and credit that he is footballing ability deserves.

i hope you're joking ?

Ronaldo WAS a great player until about 6 years ago and since then he's just turned into a goal hanger and ruined every team hes been in because the entire team has to adapt to fit around him.

he doesn't run AT ALL ... and he's completely and utterly selfish ... last night he was grabbing every free kick and shooting even one from a yard inside the touchline and then he missed his penalty, cried about it for 5 minutes and then spent the entire second half of extra time sulking.

he then scored in the shootout but afterwards if you'd just tuned in to the BBC you'd have thought Ronaldo had won it single handedly .... all they could talk about was how 'brave' Ronaldo was ... no mention of the keeper who saved the 3 Slovenian penalties

Hes just turned into a circus act and it's sad to see but he's got such an ego that nobody can tell him to call it day and he's just embarrasing himself
