Brilliant Southgate another semi final on 20:17 - Jul 6 by Clutch | Is the semis despite Southgate, not because of him. |
We've been terrible this tournament but that comment is absolute ɓoʻĺĺoʻçķș. In the past 20 years we've failed to qualify for tournaments and been knocked out by Iceland. Southgate completely changed the culture and gave players an opportunity to perform without the weight of the shirt bringing them down. This tournament he's made a terrible decision not bringing a fit proper left footed left back and trying to shoehorn Foden and Bellingham. I think that he has taken us as far as he can, regardless of if we win the tournament. But the guy deserves SO much credit for what he has achieved.

Brilliant Southgate another semi final on 19:53 - Jul 6 by Swansea_Blue | I think we are good enough, but choose not to. There was no hesitation in piling the pressure on and bossing it when we needed an equaliser. Southgate’s biggest problem is he suffers from an overdose of respect. He’s too humble imo. Go out there and be a nasty sod and not let anyone affect our game and we’d probably be fine. |
We did up the tempo when we needed to, but I think that is over simplfying the ebb and flow of a football match. Our immediate thoughts are 'McKenna would have this lot playing them off the park', but in reality, a fair amount of our games last season were won by sticking to our principles and grinding results out.

There is very little between the top 10 in my opinion. Ranking almost becomes arbitrary at that point

No. Look at today. Only made changes when we went 1 down. He's a lucky manager but not a good one. Should've won the last Euros too. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Brilliant Southgate another semi final on 20:34 - Jul 6 by wkj | Not mine, but then I think he's a good manager. If you look at all the teams in these Euros, it has generally been quite poor with the exception of a few lower ranked teams. It is clear to see how knackering it is for the amount of games these lads have to play when you factor in domestic cups, European club cups, internationals and league |
Spain are the stand out side in this competition for me, their players would have played as many games as many other countries, but they look fresh, show good movement, play with pace and pass with purpose. Not sure tiredness can be used as an excuse for other major countries?

I think Spain have been decent, but nowhere near as strong as I have seen them play in the past. I think there can be no clear favourites left in the tournament after tonight.

France WC22 surely. I'd be surprised if Italy were higher ranked but still lost to them. The only one I think is possible is maybe Croatia in semis of Euro 20? Croatia 18 possibly higher ranked as well but I doubt it. My point being - I don't think we've beaten a genuine contender under Southgate. I have defended him up to this tournament. But I just don't think its as simple as looking at how far we've progressed in tournaments when you look at the opposition we've played in them.

There is,it’s Spain. They play the best football, look the best side and appear well coached. England and France I’d put on an equal footing, quality squads but massively underperforming and I am hoping Turkey make the semi finals, they’ve been good value and play with a tenacity and energy, but they would be my outsiders.

Brilliant Southgate another semi final on 20:31 - Jul 6 by Chrisd | His England record speaks for itself, but let’s not pretend it’s good viewing. It’s painful to watch, same again tonight. We find a way, but I’m even more convinced it’s not down to his managerial prowess or tactics. He’s fortunate he has a talented group of English players that produce moments of magic to bail him out of trouble. |
That’s undeniably true. The next question is whether it matters how they progress. I don’t think it does. Entertainment isn’t a consideration. For the national team, people only care if they win. They’ll all get honours if they win a tournament and be revered for the next 60 years, irrespective of how many of us they’ve sent to sleep in the process. It’s why I don’t particularly like or follow the national team.

Don't think so. In 2018 we lost to Belgium twice, drew with Colombia, beat Sweden and lost to Croatia. Belgium may have been the team ranked above us that tournament. In 2020 we beat Germany, Ukraine and Denmark, then drew with Italy. Germany didn't get out of their group in the previous tournament, so won't have been ranked above us. In 2022 we beat Senegal then lost to France (Gareth's best managerial performance of his career IMO, with France going on to lose in the final).

I won't pretend that England are brilliant, but this team is capable of doing it. Foden, Bellingham and Palmer on at the same time was working really well. I had the benefit of only watching from 1 minute before we scored, but I though we looked miles better than we have previously at that point. We shall see though, I think we've had the easier run on paper, but Turkey will be a challenge, and if we win it - it could be exactly the kind of challenge need before a final.

Have you watched the last few tournaments? I can accept the bones of your argument in respect of his first time out at WC 2018, in terms of culture & weight of expectation; but this isn't the first tournament in which he has made poor decisions, or worse still, no decision at all when the need was there. As another poster has asked; if McKenna had left us, would you be happy with Southgate being appointed as a replacement?

True. Our principles didn’t always translate to parking the bus though. We had to dig in at times, but often because we were up against players with PL or lots of Championship experience. Southgate doesn’t have that problem. He’s in Pep’s position. From what I’ve seen this tournament he’s the anti-McKenna. It wasn’t always like this under him.

Given Englands ranking, that is a bit like asking how many league games McKenna has won against teams who finished above us.

Mgrs often make changes when the team is behind, McKenna did it a few times last season, based on that you obviously don't rate McKenna

It’s a strange hill to die on, but go for it. None of the favoured teams have properly turned up this tournament.
