Donald trump just got shot on the news! on 13:36 - Jul 14 by baxterbasics
Being registered as a Republican or Democrat in the States is not the same as being a party member here. It’s just a loose statement of political preference you indicate on forms, surveys, censuses and so on. It’s not party membership, there is no subscription to pay as such. Would be good to have this clarified further by any Yankee posters here.
When you register to vote if you identify with a particular party you get to vote in any relevant closed vote such as a Primary.

A couple of thoughts/ observations.
Trump has remarkable reflex, he puts his hand up to his ear as first shot is heard.
How remarkable that the bullet/slug didn’t go on and hit someone in the crowd behind him.
Bear in mind the bullet is travelling at supersonic speed*. It will have arrived before the sound was picked up by the microphone.
If, as reported, the shooter was 150 metres away, the bullet would have taken about 0.15 seconds to cover that distance, inflicting pain. The sound of the gunshot about 0.45 seconds, or 0.3 seconds longer**. Which is about the length of time it takes for the human nervous system to react and begin moving. Which explains why Trump put his hand to his ear about the same moment as the shot is heard.
* Muzzle velocity for an AR-15 style rifle is around 1,000 metres per second, approximately three times the speed of sound.
** All very approximate timings, not aking into account air resistance, temperature, density, etc. The maths to work that out precisely is fiendishly complicated.

So he went down before anyone could yell Donald Duck.
As Partridge pointed out, vest is useless they’ll go for a head shot. Thing is, any of us could make that shot. Needed a Grassy Knoll set up. And, where’s the wife….

From what I have read, given the building was outside the rally boundaries, it was only local police who were told about the potential gunman, and they might not have had a direct line to the Secret Service people to raise instant warning. But details keep changing and clarifying all the time so who knows.
Grizzled old-timer said on World This Weekend that they usually clear + seal off to a distance of 300m & that wasn't done on this occasion. Also that 150m is an "easy shot" even for an inexperienced gunman.
Also came out the gunman had a history of using dark web sites associated with guns & violence fantasies.

Well, this just goes to show that every American should own a gun or 5 so that they can stand up to these sorts of people.

150m an easy shot? For trained snipers maybe but not for others.

I’m not surprised with your second paragraph. He looks the sort - very much a troubled loaner. I’m not surprised he missed either, as he looks like someone who’d struggle to hit the urinal. That’s all very judgemental of me, but the wrong uns seem to stand out a mile.

'the alleged suspect, 20-year-old Thomas Crooks.
The latest detail to emerge is that he was a member of a local gun club in Jefferson Hills, Pennsylvania, roughly 50 miles (80km) from where the assassination attempt occurred.'

Not a trained sniper but someone who had the opportunity to practice shooting.
So he can travel the distance from Ipswich to Norwich and know how to locate and climb the only roof in the area unopposed that had a clear line of site 130 yards away from the target.
A lot of questions to be asked and some people sure to lose their jobs.

I don't understand how Secret Service snipers can be on rooftops and not spot a lad with a rifle on another, lower rooftop. And why, when members of the public pointed out the shooter to police a full 2 minutes before he fired, they didn't do anything.
Something fishy going on IMO.
Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Nonsense, just proof that the agencies weren't communicating. 20 year old young man, relentlessly bullied at school, especially over his lack of shooting prowess at gun club, ends up dead trying to prove them all wrong. A terribly sad business really which almost assures Trump's election.

Lack of communication amongst agencies doesn't explain how snipers on one roof didn't see a lad with a rifle on another, lower roof. It's literally their job.
Trust the process. Trust Phil.

The SS sniper had him in his sights long before he pulled the trigger and was probably waiting for authorisation to take the shot which didn't seem to come too quickly.

Although, as far as I can see from the BBC item on this, the assertion that Crooks was useless with a rifle comes from a single source. Hearsay can be unreliable. And someone in their teens can be useless at something at, say, fifteen and then be extremely good two years later through that intensity that the teenage years and adolescence give through the changes a body goes through at that age.
Similarly political views, for example I was ludicrously right wing at fourteen and very left wing at eighteen (I think I might have passed through anarchism in a few forms along the way too) before becoming the standard disillusioned and then apolitical in my twenties. Embarrassingly I went through a bland liberal democrat phase later on but thankfully I seem to have ended up centre of the spectrum socialist now. So I doubt whether anything conclusions can be drawn from his voter registration or a single donation to a vague political cause.
[edit] The 'two years later' that I meant to include but omitted has now been added, as well as a paragraph break to try and improve my usual stodgy overwriting. And the capitalisation of 'o' in SO corrected because it made me look like I was labouring the conclusion. I really need to buy a new chromebook because the keyboard on this one is going home.

So they waited until he'd actually shot Trump? Doesn't seem like a very effective way of protecting people.
In fact it's worse than that if what you're saying is correct. Crooks had several shots at Trump before the SS snipers took him out - so you're suggesting he was actually shooting whilst an SS sniper had him in his sights and he STILL didn't take him out?!?

It’s not a Die Hard movie dollers. You can’t just go shooting people without an order. They aren’t allowed to make judgement calls on their own.

I think the reason they couldn't see him is that the roof Crooks was on was pitched away from where the SS were positioned and they probably only had a shot at his head when he was aiming over the edge of the pitched roof. The witness the BBC spoke to soon after the event said the SS couldn't see the shooter. The main issue is a lack of communication between forces by the looks of things.

Perhaps the first four shots were from Crooks and, as he still hadn't hit the target by then, the fifth shot was the Security Services having a go.And they didn't do much better despite being closer.
Actually not that funny when you consider the two dead and two injured and a shame that the slow release of detail fuels conspiracy theories and suspicions of cover ups in the immediate aftermath.

Here's an interesting article on conspiracy theories after the shooting.

It’s obviously a failure in communication.

"Judgement call"?!? A guy is pointing a rifle at the former president, I don't think you need a lot of judgement to tell what's going to happen. Absolutely ridiculous.
And how do you explain that he managed to get into the complex with a rifle and ammunition, without being searched, managed to climb up on a roof without being seen, then set up on said roof whilst people on the ground were pointing out there's a gunman... and snipers on a higher roof didn't manage to see any of this (or were waiting the entire time for an order)?!
Pretty rubbish way of protecting someone. I'm sure if I pulled a gun on the king the security services would take me down immediately, not wait until I'd had a few pops at him.
EDIT: The security services on the ground, who smothered Trump, were shouting that the shooter was down. How did they know there was only one?
