Donald trump just got shot on the news! on 01:19 - Jul 14 by reusersfreekicks

The madness of guns in America summed up by a Trump supporter being interviewed on bbc - without the freedom to carry guns you are not free!!
He also said some pretty mixed up stuff re freedoms in the country and preserving them whilst attending a rally for someone who is the biggest threat to American democracy for years. Seems many people voting for Trump have no idea what or who they are voting for.
Really worrying

It seems like a lot of people who call Trump the biggest threat to democracy are very concerned about letting democracy run its course. The biggest threat to democracy currently is pushing a narrative that Trump is anti-democratic when he keeps on entering democratic elections. It is irresponsible for people to say that he would never leave office. That kind of talk unfounded talk is fuel for would be assassins.

X is full of Trump supporters blaming Obama, Biden, and the Democrats for this, inciting violence.

I guess Jan 6th 2021 didn’t exist that year then.

To think, the USA is co-hosting the World Cup in two years.

It's difficult to argue with the logic considering the dehumanizing tone of the Trump coverage. It is possible to believe that there are bad actors on both sides.

The state of this forum, a bunch of authoritarians spreading fake news and wishing death on a political candidate with a different opinion to them. Democracy is dying in the west

Indeed, you'd think these Trump supporters would be off to start a civil war rather than griping on a football forum....

In Trump's mind there are only 2 possible outcomes to elections

Scenario 1

Trump wins a majority, is duly elected and then takes his rightful place in The White House

Scenario 2

Trump gets less votes than the winner. Trump calls voter fraud, crooked election officials and then organises a riot to propel him to what he sees as his rightful place in The White House

There is no scenario 3 in which Trump loses the election and gracefully concedes defeat and sends good wishes to the true winner

Trump is an anti-democratic menace

This post lacks any proper thought.

Democracy gave us Hitler. Democracy is a good thing, but it is entirely reasonable to be concerned about what it sometimes produces. Especially in circumstances where people have been purposely manipulated by demonising categories of people, and actively lying about things.

Trump will only be a threat to democracy if the Republicans have control in Congress.

Already donors are withholding financial support for Biden but increasing support for Democrat congressional candidates.

A Democratic congress can block Trumps wildest plans.

It will be even more interesting how people try to slyly justify an assassination attempt while still condemning Trump's vague role in the Capitol Hill events.

Trump's role was not vague. It was clear and demonstrable.

Who has "slyly justified an assassination attempt"?

Secret Service protocol being broken, exposing his head and torso, while they have no idea if there is an active shooter still.

All so Trump can shout “fight, fight, fight” to the crowd.

Perhaps you should revisit your previous post which was something I’d have expected from Pazelle or CIL. You capitalised on the violence to push your own conspiratorial narrative.

You can thank God that the assassination attempt wasn't successful, unless you are actually pushing for a civil war. It is incredible how weak some people's belief in democracy is when there is a candidate that they don't like. People even talk about him being fascist. There is nothing more fascist than using violence to dispose of your enemies. It's a very awkward situation for the Democrats because they have been dehumanizing Trump to such an extent that they irresponsibly left room for political violence.

So... a Republican supporter shoots a Republican candidate who has a history of inciting violence and is a rabid supporter of widespread gun ownership with few restraints. And you are blaming the Democrats who have consistently campaigned for greater gun control.

Your scenario 2 makes no sense.
We've already had an example of what happens when Trump loses and it's not pretty and it sows division, but it is not a credible threat on democracy.
I'm not even sure of the word to call what happened in the Capitol, because it's certainly not an uprising in a country where it is so easy to get guns, but no-one came to the Capitol with guns. There was only one death and that was a protester who got shot by the Capitol staff. It was definitely at least symbolic trespassing, not the worst crime in comparison to an assassination attempt. My view was that Trump was very careful to not explicitly his supporters to cause trouble, in fact he told them not to use violence and told them to go home. I don't think anyone can argue that he didn't whip up his angry supporters. I'm not convinced that it was a free and fair election, but the key thing was that it was clear from early on that there was no evidence that would stick.

The threat on democracy is more about the general atmosphere. Hillary Clinton still does not believe that Trump won against her. The Democrats fought tooth and nail against Trump and impeached Trump on spurious grounds twice. There was fortification of the 2020 election, whether that is classed as fixing the vote is more a matter of opinion. The people in power are always trying to stack the odds in their favour. Since Biden got in there was a concerted effort to convict Trump of something. They finally managed to get a left-leaning judge to convict Trump on shaky grounds, that will probably be overturned, but the political point scoring served its purpose, but maybe backfired because Trump's appeal is certainly not based on virtue. It was a dangerous precedent to set that you could convict an ex president. I have no doubt that if there was political will behind it, you could convict every previous President of something. The Presidency selects for crooked people.

At least we can agree that an assassination attempt is not justified. We can't preemptively take action based on your opinion that Trump will spark a violent uprising to retake power. You are wandering into pre-crimes there.

If you can't remember, then maybe you also have a faulty recollection of all of the details. You certainly can't fascistically stop someone from gaining power because you believe that someone is a fascist. The military and police should be set up to react and forcefully enforce a legitimate election after the fact, not before it.

Trump tried to get people to 'find votes'. Don't forget that one. It wasn't all about what happened at the Capitol.

Also I assume Ewan was talking about a certain Mr Putin and was being a bit sarcy.

Someone doesn't understand the cumulative effect of continually pushing and stretching boundaries, or continually telling a credulous public that there is a state conspiracy against them and that the machinery of democracy is secretly weighted against them and can't be trusted or respected.

Your comments on Clinton are bizarre. Unless you can find some evidence of her actively saying that the election was rigged (as you can, easily, for Trump).

The desperate tap dance you are doing is painful to see.

His comments were clear. Not a direct call to violence, but pursuing the narrative that there is something sinister and institutional to be fought against, and that it was behind the incident. Which is plainly blx.
