Why no ITFC players being touted? 11:42 - Jul 22 with 3948 viewsClemcc

A curiosity question, (not temping faith) town been linked to many players over the last few months but I haven’t seen any linking (full sales) to other clubs in the gossip pages - not even speculation ones. Of course Town will say no but not even casting the hook?

I have wondered this before

I'm guessing there's two main reasons. 1 is that we haven't really had an individual star performers. We're more a sum of our parts than reliant on individuals

The second is probably to do with the ages of some of our stronger performers over the last couple of years. Chaplin, Burgess, Burns, Morsy would probably be on a lot of mid table prem sides wishlists if they were in their early twenties

Which of our players would established premier league teams be interested in?

Davis
Woolfenden?
Hirst?

All of those are unproven at prem level. I guess most teams would want to wait and see how they adapt. Especially as we are seen as a team that is greater than the sum of its parts, and most of our success is attributed to our manager, rather than players.

I know Premier League clubs were looking at Leif in January. Nottingham Forest were very keen. However, I think promotion has meant he's not really looking to move on. Wouldn't surprise me if a new deal were to be announced at some stage.

I think for a variety of reasons other teams seem to not be interested in our players.

1. We seem to have a happy settled squad resulting in no one asking their agents to either force a move or to cultivate interest in them.
2. We are an ambitious PL team and the players want to be part of that top tier ambition.
3. They’ve yet to be tested in the PL.

Possibly come Christmas if we are having a great start to the campaign some teams might well enquire about certain players then.

Davis yes, Hirst maybe, Woolfenden no. I honestly believe Baggott to be better, but for reasons unknown he hasn't been given a chance yet we haven't loaned him out or moved him on. Thought he was the standout player against Fulham in the cup last year when he came on as sub. Woolfenden to me isn't physically strong enough and makes positional errors.

Giving Kieran his massive contract probably indirectly sent a message out to other clubs that we mean business & hadn’t any need to sell. Top dollar would need to be paid for any of our star players for the club to even consider

Think Baggott has been out on loan a few times. Bristol Rovers last season

Better to stay silent and be thought a fool than open your mouth and remove all doubt

All of that plus our best players are (fairly or unfairly) not seen as big name enough for mid to upper prem teams to take a punt on. Which is good for us and helps keep a settled squad.

Guess the main point is that there's probably only a handful that would attract PL interest, and we don't need to sell any of them so they would be very expensive deals to do (eg. Davis).

Most wouldn't have any interest in dropping down a division if there's a chance of premier league football, the likes of Taylor and maybe even Edmundson. They're probably not deals we would want to do until we've signed a fair few more I wouldn't have thought.

Then there's a few that might be surplus now, but priced out of a move to their natural level, which makes those deals harder to do (eg. Harness & Ladapo).

I think we'll see a few more departures, but probably wont ratify those until most of our spending has taken place.

Not even as many as a handful, but that may change once they’ve got PL experience. I’m surprised Championship clubs haven’t been sniffing around a few of our more fringe players. Although they have been competing with us (Rodon).

Yeah probably not. Davis is the obvious one. There's a couple who you feel are 6 good months of premier league football away, the likes of Woolfenden and Hirst probably and then a couple of those we've only recently added.

The problem is our fringe players at the moment weren't established members of the promotion winning side last season, the likes of Harness and AA-H, so they're not necessarily going to appeal to top end championship clubs. Or they're in the Autumn of their careers like Luongo who may find himself fringed in the not too distant future. I could see Edmundson back at somewhere like at a Derby County.

Odd take re “Woolf vs Baggott”

To start with Woolf and Baggott are totally different types of players who play on different sides.

Plus Baggott has been out on multiple loans.

And Woolf is class. Top half Championship player, minimum.

Baggott could certainly go on to be a very good centre back but he is still early on in his journey, I assume we'll want to get him a top League One club or perhaps a Championship loan to test his development?

He’s going to be 22 this year, he needs to be playing at a higher level than league one if he’s going to make it with us. A Championship loan makes sense unless KM sees him playing a role for us this season. I’d really like to see us bring some of our own talent through but given our rapid ascent it’s going to be tough for them.

I'd pretty much say our only really valuable asset who other clubs would look at is Leif and if he isn't interested in moving on, then that is that, really.

Players that do move on, we just seem to get it done quietly and we hear about it when it is done.

I was asked a similar question the other day.

We have one of the best managers in football and a strength is picking specific players for a certain style and coaching them to play close to their current ceiling and to improve that ceiling. I wonder how many, if any, would play as well or better in another team.

Davis and Hutchinson are the closest we have to star players. Players that display individual talent that could suggest they could operate at a similarly high level outside of the current coaching. Hutchinson had interest from elsewhere, which we fought off. Davis would have liked sold well (like Greaves) if we remained in the Championship. But to take him away from us he'd need to command a figure above what is reasonable, and I don't think a premiership team would be prepared to do that without seeing him have at least one good season in the premiership.

I also agree with some of the other reasons given.

I don't mean this in a derogatory manner, but who would be interested in a load of unproven league 1 and championship players? Good, then we shall keep what we want and you others go look elsewhere.

Imagine any club dealing with Ashton

" we want to talk about Davis"

" I bet you do, £50 mill and we can talk. Otherwise thank you but no thank you.

Whilst you're one the phone, we are interested in.... for 2.4 mill.

I do hope so as I fear we'll lose him for nothing when his deal ends.

I’m sure Mark Ashton said at some point around the end of the season we’re not a selling club. I assume it’s because at the moment we don’t have to be, and whether we will always strive to keep our best players unless we have to sell. I guess that’s how continuous development of the club will happen.

Interesting how different next summer will be if we have a good season next season!

If we hadn't won promotion, pretty sure Leif Davis would have gone to a Premier League club. Not sure about any of the others. Nearly all our players are unproven at the highest level so not much interest from other PL clubs. It may change after our first season, if a few of them, hopefully, excel themselves. If we have a successful season then next close season there could well be lots of interest in the ones that have done particularly well. Big money offers for the likes of Davis, Hutchinson, Greaves, Hirst, Delap perhaps.

Out of those three listed, I’d say only Davis.
