Perhaps we should look to recoup some of that by cancelling HS2, closing tax loopholes and aggressively pursuing PPE and track and trace fraudsters? Oh, and actually standing an improved chance of recruiting and retaining doctors will pay for itself, very quickly.

I suppose you would cancel the defence budget as well wouldn’t you? Just listened to her statement she has committed to £22b of spending in her first 24 days and taxes won’t go up! Yea right😂 just to be clear I’m not defending the other lot either. [Post edited 29 Jul 2024 16:22]

I can understand why a right-winger might be licking their wounds right now, but why are so many left-wingers so pissed off about Reeves talking about a Tory budget black hole?

Because it’s an excuse for enacting austerity again. There’s no “black hole” – all this is publicly available info. Everyone knew Hunt’s last budget was never going to happen. It is good news that they’re trying to end the public sector strikes. And some of the infratsructure they’re cancelling seems sensible.

Surely that’ll be accepted? An additional 4% on last year’s offer plus accepting the independent pay review panel’s recommendation for 24-25 and throwing in an extra £1k feels like a generous offer. I know it’s not as much as their pay was eroded under the Tories, but the optics of rejecting that would look bad and they’d likely lose public support.

Junior doctors offered 22% over next two years on 16:42 - Jul 29 with 1859 views | JW_ITFC | Genuinely no idea where they got that 22% from. It’s 4% from what was enforced on them last year. Then 6% next year, but hold my breath on that one until it happens. Can’t trust the BBC as much as Channel One in Russia - it’s so government censored on certain subjects including this one. Who even had insight to the last 3 strikes? There was no media coverage in the slightest.

But the black hole or whatever terminology you prefer, wasn't her fault. You're right - everyone (interested in politics) knew the score, so the blame she seems to be getting for finally acknowledging the issue makes no sense to me. Argue about the merits of taxing or borrowing more... fine, but much of this seems to be rallying against reality.

To want pay linked to god knows how many years ago was a piss take! They knew their pay when they signed on, a pay rise is warranted but the BamA knew they were never going to get 35%. 22% seems a tad high now we will have the nurses etc saying hang on we didn’t get anywhere near that! She has also lost a few million votes by cutting fuel payments to pensioners. According to the IFS half of this £20b hole is off her own making by accepting the pay review bodies recommendations without productivity guarantees. Which the last govt hadn’t even seen! If you or anybody else thinks we wont be paying more tax in one way or another dream on😂

Junior doctors offered 22% over next two years on 17:32 - Jul 29 with 1584 views | Mullet | Well overdue and a great endorsement of workers not being bullied by Tory lies. We are getting 5.5%, which I can’t see enacting strikes as there are other promises being made. However, it’ll be interesting to see how it lines up with the lack of pay for several years, rates of inflation etc and what it does to the profession. I got promoted the other week, so I was about to get a small bump up in September- hopefully it’s not all swallowed up by sneaking into the next tax band!
