Unless there's a breach of contract I'm not sure what they would do. There are reports of a "gentleman's agreement" about a fee he could leave for but you would think the new contract he signed in January would trump that.

Absolutely. I would love him to come here, and if Blackburn are being d*cks then they should stop, and be reasonable. It's all a question of money, and the parties should negotiate a market rate and draw a line under it.
However, as regards the legalities, SS signed a new contract very recently in which he committed to play for Blackburn for years. One would think he got a hefty pay rise for that, otherwise I can't see a reason to sign. He can hardly grumble to a union that Blackburn now want to get the very thing that they were seeking to secure when signing him up for longer - a decent fee if he leaves. Again, in legal terms, he is the one who wants to renege on the contract, and not them (assuming there is not a clause in the contract that has been triggered that allows him to leave - if there were, then the deal would surely be done by now).
I'm sure Ashton and the top brass know what they're doing, and they will fight our corner. They will also have a cut off, and will move on at some point. Blackburn will appreciate that to some extent, and will not want to risk having a grumpy star player with no pre-season, and no deal on the table, come the start of the season.

Need to get him in this week and get him 50-60 mins on the pitch. Probably more like 30. Realistically he's coming in undercooked now which is such a shame. Will have to get him up to the cups before can get proper mins in the legs I imagine.
The match sharpness aspect is the worrying element from our point of view. He'll be coming in half-baked at best ahead of a Premier League campaign. If we really want him (we do) and he's eyed as a first-choice player (unsure), surely we're at a point now where we have to suck up the extra £500k and get him in the building?

He's not gonna be first choice so if he takes an extra week or so to get up to speed it'll be OK. He'll have had some pre-season anyway, not like he has done nothing.

I think he played 1 pre-season game (Accrington away?) and went off with a knock. I'm pretty sure that's it. He's gonna take a good month of training to be up to speed now IMO.

I totally get that, but equally, is this Mexican stand-off causing us more than £500,000 of issues re. squad depth/preparation? Almost certainly IMO.

Got to be more to it that just £500K. You are right if they have reneged once on an 'acceptable' price they could do it again. Don't you take that risk and if they d1ck around again we walk away? Nobody will ever know the real numbers so he media can spin it how they like it just depends if we want to air any dirty laundry or just suck up how its being reported as people in the industry know the game Blackburn are playing.
Of course they are entitled to hold out for the most money and maybe they still think someone else will come in and pay more. I just don't see us being £500K apart at this point for it to keep dragging.
We have to be past that point this is worth more to KMc that this is done and not dragging on.

I think it'll happen whether we do offer the other £500k or not. The trouble is, when it happens will be the final few days in the transfer window.
Blackburn's owners are only jeopardising their own chances of staying up, but it's going to leave them in a messy situation to wrap up some signings to replace Szmodics and improve the squad - a situation John Eustace won't be happy with.
I predict we'll get him, it's more when not if. We just need to get more quality into the building in the meantime.

Looks like he’s going to have to put in a transfer request if he really wants to get the ball rolling. That might help the fee they accept if they don’t have to pay him a loyalty fee.
