Nobody will remember this, but I remember Ian Redford for the goal he scored against Watford in the Zenith Data Systems Cup tie at Portman Road in November of 1989.
He was already one of my favourite players - as a kid I followed the Dundee Utd European adventure of 1987 in the UEFA Cup. I was thrilled when he came to Ipswich.
I've found a record of the team that night, and I'm assuming that it was Frank Yallop who broke down the right and aimed a cross at an onrushing Redford.
He headed the ball from just outside the area straight into the top corner. I'd never seen anything like it.
There were only about 5000 people there, so I doubt many of you were in attendance, but the game was memorable for a David Gregory hat-trick on what was maybe his debut?

Sergei Baltacha's debut v Stoke in 1988. The whole stand reverberated to chants of "Sergei, Sergei" when he scored. Shame we never played him in his best role of sweeper. Remember his picture on the programme with his missus, who looked a bit like the blonde one out of Abba. |  |
