What do you think on 08:51 - Aug 20 with 3481 views | Sandman180 | There's no time for sentiment now, you play your best available team at all opportunities within the league, granted it's very unlikely we get anything from Saturday's game, but there needs to be some form of team structure implemented as we head into September... Burgess/Edmundson will play a part against AFC Wimbledon I'm sure, in the meantime, you keep Greaves/Wolfy and don't upset the equilibrium too much. Feel a little for Burgess, but that's football - sentiment won't keep us in the league, remember that.

As much as I've defended him on here, and think he did really well on Saturday, I wouldn't be surprised if we did make a change at the back due to Haaland's physicality, with Woolfenden dropping out. It could be a case of Johnson in at right back, Tuanzebe moving across, Hutchinson switching to the right and maybe Harness coming in to cover the left. I could also see Muric in for Walton, Cajuste for Luongo and Szmodics for Chaplin. Or perhaps even a back three where Edmundson or Burgess come in for Burns with Hutchinson and Szmodics playing as tens.

Yes i get what you are saying, but feel realistically we wont get anything from the game, and its just reward for their efforts to play in a one off game against the Champions in a massive ground, i suppose iam just being a big softy.

Imagine if McKenna had the attitude that 'realistically we won't get anything from the game'.

To be fair he half admitted the other day. When talking about the opening two games he said: “We take that as a positive. We know on the flip-side of it coming into the season that we’ll have no points after the first two games…”
What do you think on 09:42 - Aug 20 with 3065 views | davblue | we have to get out of this mentality/mindset that we are on a tour and we should be giving people chances so they can have a day out. This is serious business, we have to try and stay in the premier league.

Think a back three of Tuanzebe Greaves plus one maybe burgess with his strength and Wolfy and Edmundson v the Wombles. Two fullbacks playing deep and packing midfield. How long until Harry Clarke is back? Maybe Omari and Chappers behind Delap and playing on the break. Its a free shot for a point ,and build up for a few good performances in the next three league games. | | | | Login to get fewer ads
What do you think on 09:47 - Aug 20 with 3014 views | Bluefields | Play your best back four, imo,as much as possible. Too many gaps appeared on Saturday, particularly Salah running in between and behind Greaves and Davis as they were too far apart. Fulham will be a very difficult game btw, good Premier League side.

Yes of course i'm in agreement but was it sentiment that stopped KM making a change at HT or soon after on Saturday ? He must have seen Massimo ,who had a good 35 minutes, had run out of steam and just could not get anywhere near Trent AA . 31 year old Massimo on Premier League debut running on empty i just felt for him . We all love our manager and of course great what he has done but remember this was his first Premier game as a manager too did he get it wrong ? [Post edited 20 Aug 2024 10:03]

Be very dangerous to start thinking we cant get anything out of the game today ! realistic or not . It must be 100% every game or we will be doomed .

What do you think on 10:03 - Aug 20 with 2809 views | SomethingBlue | You don't give people a go at the Etihad as a present, you play the best team you can and hope to keep the scoreline respectable. As it happens we will be very lightweight on numbers elsewhere on the pitch so you can be pretty sure you'll see our best defence.

What do you think on 10:06 - Aug 20 with 2761 views | Vaughan8 | You're winning today for the most silly suggestion. Yep. Lets let everyone have a go. GIve AL-Hamadi a start up front If they're what McKenna thinks is our best team then yes, but I doubt he'll not play Greaves. We aren't here to "give people a go", especially vs the best team, away, where we could get hammered even with our best team.
What do you think on 10:11 - Aug 20 with 2715 views | Rimsy | Going forward in this league, I think we're going to have to play 3 centre backs. The way, especially Leif, pushes on, it just leaves us too exposed. So Axel, Wolfy (I'd prefer Burgess) and Greaves central with 2 proper wing backs.

McCarthy going to Old Trafford didn't even bother to reward players. Just went straight with the 'we won't get anything' and then denied his generals and proper blokes one of the best moments of their careers. All to get a win on the Saturday. Which of course the disgruntled main squad failed to do. Was the most bit of bizarre management I have ever seen. As negative as Mick was, he also wasn't stupid, so no idea what the hell that was about. Not a chance Kieran would ever do that. Let alone on Saturday. [Post edited 20 Aug 2024 10:49]

Was interesting we dabbled with the back 3 during pre-season. I think it was exactly for this sort if game. Johnson/Tuanzebe/Greaves/Burgess/Davis. Might see Greaves try to nullify Haaland getting behind as much as possible. There is going to be a lot of elbow action. I like the idea of Hutchinson and Szmodics behind Delap. Both can quickly cover a lot of ground with the ball which will need with one less No10

Agree with a lot of that. Hutch has to come over the the right - arguably his best position - and Szmodders in place of Chappers (greaves me to say that as I really like the little guy!). At the back it's a bit more nuanced. We certainly saw Burgess (or was it Edmondson?) brought in a for a game against a strong attacker? Its so fascinating isn't it, anticipating and seeing how our boys get on against some of the best players in the world. They will learn so much from these first two games regardless of the scores. I hope it's not a cricket score on sat - I've said elsewhere that I'll be happy if we keep it to three (though I fear it might be more!)

He did the same with Wolves in a league game - went to Old Trafford and played the reserves as they faced Burnley a few days later. The club were fined for bringing the game into disrepute but did pick up three points against the latter.

Slot made changes 2nd half, which worked and allowed more space down the right side, think Mass and quite a few was tiring, should McKenna have picked up on both? possibly, but maybe just a bit too late, he will learn from it.
