Talking about train fares. Just booked a return from York to Stockport for work. Over £60 plus a few changes along the way. Trains from east to west/west to east in the UK are a nightmare |

Can’t remember how much we paid, but when we was in Switzerland 5 years ago we paid nowhere near £52, and we got the train from Zurich Airport to Lucerne, 72 hour rail pass for Lucerne and surrounding areas and travel back to Zurich Airport on the Monday.
This country is a joke for its rail travel. |  |

standard off peak cost thesedays, how do families afford it? they book advance fares on specific timed trains, make use of the many railcard schemes, group save fares, split tickets if theyre that bothered.
Greater Anglia have a whole page dedicated to how to save money for football fans travelling by trains.

I don't have the data obviously but it's been a success as it actually encourages people to take the bus to town or the airport etc rather than drive or cab. It would not surprise me if they cut it though, easy ways to make profit whilst losing customers who would not normally get the bus.
I mean FFS, need to make their mind up what is the priority. Bending people over for profit or encouraging change for climate and public transport as a whole. |  | | |

My season ticket is £8,500 a year and I only go in the office 3/4 days a week. That’s out of my net pay so essentially costs me £15k a year just to get to work which is thoroughly depressing.
GA have made it so it’s impossible to travel peak time at a reasonable price for a one hour journey as they have such a monopoly over it all. The trains are more efficient and are much nicer now with the new stock but Jesus we pay for it. |  | | |

It was indeed cheaper on the split fare website but only by £7 and could only take the nominated trains.
Just paid full fare in the end for the flexibility of having a pint after and not rushing.

The ticket site might have misled you somehow, but you definitely don’t need to take nominated trains when splitting at Manningtree. It’s a super off-peak day return to Manningtree and then an off-peak day return to Ipswich. The only extra condition is that you have to take trains that call at Manningtree, but practically all of them do. | | | |

Paying £152 for my return ticket to Manchester for the City game, and that includes 20% off for the Ipswich to Liv St journey on my over-50s railcard. But I really can't be asred to drive and hate travelling on coaches. Add in the footy ticket, a hotel and food and drink and not much change from about £400. We'd better bloody win! |  | | |
