Unless you have some other benefit like disability, then the full state will be above the pension credit limit Not having a go about your comment re people being made redundant and unable to find other employment, that is a difficult situation. But in my neighbours situation her friend didn't work all her life and will get the winter fuel because she only gets the basic state pension and was able to claim pension credits. That's why a lot of pensioners are genuinely upset, it's not purely pensioners who were in well paid jobs |
I didn't make any such comment.

Can someone that knows the facts on this please fill in the blanks on 20:51 - Sep 10 by stainless | There is a lot of scare mongering by the Tories about the scrapping of the heating allowance. It is now going to be means tested, so those that don't need it won't get it. Millions will still be eligible. The government say they will be raising the pension at the next budget by approximately £400. |
"The government say they will be raising the pension at the next budget by approximately £400." Isn't that just what's due under the triple lock?

It is not means tested. There is a hard cut-off if you don't qualify for pension credit. That is not strictly means testing.

The pension is rising because of the triple lock, so that was happening anyway (of course Labour had to confirm they would stick to it). So this is money that’s being taken away. Here’s £400 to cover inflation, now give us £300 back. It’s fair for people to be annoyed by that imo. (We shouldn’t need a heating allowance at all imo; the state pension should be sufficient to allow people to retire with dignity - but we are where we are). For most, losing the money won’t matter and it’s just another part of the cost of living issue. For some it really will matter though, as hundreds of thousands are expected to slip through the net. It’s the continued erosion of state support for pensioners (on top of the frozen tax threshold for years). Ps - yes, there’s a lot of scare mongering from the Tories, although some are spot on. There’s also a lot of scaremongering from Labour. The idea that this move is required to save the economy from collapsing is laughable. [Post edited 11 Sep 2024 8:23]

Yep, and that’s why people should try to put a little aside each month into a private pension if they can. Although that’s obviously not so easy if they’re paying extortionate rent, saving for ann extortionate mortgage or and living off zero hours contracts though.

It is worth pointing out that the payment is per household and the amount is £200 rising to £300 if over 80. So if two pensioners living together they receive £100 each. Not heard it mention but assume the stupid £10 Christmas bonus paid to each and every pensioner will also be a thing of the past. Boo.

As mentioned above, that’ll be allowable expenses for her permissible London accommodation, as part of the MP’s working allowances. It’s not the same as receiving a universal heating allowance. (Any OAP MPs will also be losing their £300 heating allowance). It’s comparing apples with pears, although obviously it’s not the best optics. I wouldn’t want to extend that arguement out and have all working expenses banned. [Post edited 11 Sep 2024 8:42]

MPs get an allowance for a second home so they can have one in their constituency and one close enough to work in Westminster. There's lots of issues with the system, but I don't really see the problem with this - as it is an MP earns around £90k, which is a lot obviously, but they wouldn't be able to run two houses on that including one in London

And no doubt in 30 years or so the meagre amount something like auto enrolment into a work pension scheme will be seen as enough to not give people a state pension...!

That's more than the total number of unemployed people in the UK. https://commonslibrary.parliament.uk/research-briefings/cbp-9366/ In May to July 2024, the unemployment figure was 1.44m, by no means all of whom will be of foreign origin. People migrate to the UK to work (legally or otherwise), not to battle with the Universal Credit system.

Right, so they do get an allowance of some description, and heating that second home falls under that. Wonder if they’ve heard of the premier inn hubs all over London these days. Would imagine they are cheaper to stay in

An allowance is a given sum. MP’s are refunded in full for Utility costs.
